About
Residence designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1952 for his dwelling. The house, owned by the family of the architect, is gently released for public viewing by its historical and achitectural interest.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was the first thing I visited when discovering Rio de Janeiro. And it was absolutely the right choice. Niemeyer is already for 8 decades a living monument of contemporary architecture. His personal family house dates from the early fifties and shows clearly his love for curves and the female body. It's located in the middle of a vast domain in one of the many armpits of the heavy meandering Estrada das Canoas.
When we arrived, a guard opened the gate and let us in. Strolling down a slope, the shapes of the swimming pool and the house became bit by bit clear. The pool is surrounded by statues and torsos of women. Inside, the interior breathes the 1950's. There's a small exhibition on display and you can buy one of the many books already published about him and his works, or another souvenir.
Most of the buildings by Niemeyer are public commissions, making it not so difficult to get in and admire them. But for obvious reasons, the private houses he created are not open to the general public, with this as an evident exception.
How to get there? You need a cab. The house is hidden from the street by a wall. It's somewhere up the hill, at the right side, if coming from São Conrado and Rio. Absolutely keep the number of the house in your mind, because our driver had to drive back. When there, ask also to see the nearby viewpoint 'Mirante das Canoas', designed by Roberto Burle Marx, another big name for architecture and garden design lovers.

We tried to visit in early February on a Saturday and were told in advance that it wouldn't be open for visitation, but we went anyway to see it anyway. There was no one around, the pool was filled but very green water and leaves, as if it had been unattended for a long time. We poked around from a distance. It looked furnished but not lived in.
That said, it's an amazing house, and one of few private residences by Niemeyer. It was a great pleasure to see, the exterior in relatively good shape with the organic shape fitting its natural setting perfectly.

Please note that the web address linked to this landmark is wrong - it goes to another "Casa das Canoas" in Rio - but not the one designed by Oscar Niemeyer. I have not visited the Casa das Canoas but would love to one day.

The house is closed, under reconstruction, but even in the guest house - 500m before the villa - no one told us... I was very disappointed after 4 km walking up in the forest, 36 Celsius and in a sudden storm!

Casa das Canoas is marvelous, even more so at night. We attended a gala event as a trip celebration prepared by the group we were guests with. In this regards, the site itself was amazing. Whatever catering and food service they hired was also spectacular. The area is wonderful at night and seeing the different areas and architectural lines filled with people definitely gives you a good scope of the majestic aura present here.
