Neighbourhood: Ipanema
Ipanema is considered Rio's crown jewel. It offers the best view of the sunset from Arpoador and is inspiration for the legendary song, “The Girl from Ipanema.” Ipanema is an upscale area, home to many high-end restaurants and luxury shops, many of which can be found on the charming Garcia d'Ávila Avenue. The neighbourhood is very rich culturally, housing many art galleries that show contemporary art. There is also a great variety of nightlife in the neighbourhood, which buzzes with many options for every taste.

Among the 3 most recognized beaches, it is the quietest beach and without a doubt the one with the best sunset. By far. But maybe with some additional posts it would be my favorite. If you are looking for umbrellas and chairs, try to negotiate the free ones with low consumption; The reference for good prices is caipirinhas at 12-15 reais

A song made Ipanema Beach famous. The area, though, would have been famous anyway without the song due to its beauty. I would say Impanema Beach area would be my first or second choice in staying in Rio de Janeiro.

The day we were there a number of surfers where taking advantage of the reasonably high surf. There were also a good number of people enjoying the beach. It is one of those areas that one needs to make a visit.

Don't leave without taking a photo of the "Estatua de Tom Jobim." Someone was cleaver in placing an artistic statue along the walkway. Well worth a photo opp.

Ipanema Beach is the little sister to Copacabana but is within easy walking distance.

While Copacabana is lined with hotel Ipanema is lined with Apartments and residences.

When we were there the beach was less crowded but still a large corniche to walk along although far less beach bars to frequent.

Ipanema does have a vibrant restaurant and bar scene a few blocks off the seafront and we ended up eating and drinking there most nights despite our hotel being on Copacabana.

The development of Villa de Ipanema intensifies from the beginning of the 20th century, when the city of Rio de Janeiro moves from the Central region to the South from the neighborhoods of Flamengo, Botafogo and later Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon. The beach terrain falls to the taste of the population and the tram lines, opened in 1902, facilitate the urbanization of Villa de Ipanema, still a deserted sandy.

The chafariz das Sacaduras of the old Convento da Ajuda, demolished to give place to the Municipal Theatre, was transferred to Piaça Ferreira Viana, today General Osório. In 1918, the Franciscan College and the Church of Our Lady of Peace were erected in the then 20th of November Street, today Visconde de Pirajá. The first Mass in the Church was celebrated, however, only on 12 May 1921. The landscape design of the sidewalks of Ipanema is the architect and landscape designer Renato Primavera Marinho, in commemoration of the fourth century of the city.

Ipanema Beach is everything I dreamed it would be—and more! The stunning stretch of golden sand, vibrant atmosphere, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains make it an unforgettable destination. The energy here is incredible, with a perfect mix of locals and tourists enjoying the sun, sea, and fun.

The beach is impeccably clean, and the turquoise waters are ideal for swimming, though the waves can be a bit strong, so it’s great for surfers too. What I loved most was how lively and diverse Ipanema is—you can relax, play beach volleyball, or join in a game of futebol with locals.

The nearby kiosks serve fresh coconut water and local snacks, and there's always music in the air, adding to the fun and relaxing vibe. Plus, watching the sunset behind the Dois Irmãos mountains is truly magical—it’s a moment you won’t forget.

Ipanema Beach is also well-connected, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops just a short walk away. Whether you’re looking for a place to unwind or join the local beach culture, Ipanema offers a little bit of everything. It's a must-visit for anyone coming to Rio!

Beautiful beaches, wide, with soft sand and many stalls that offer you for 15 Rs a parasol and 5 Rs each chair all day. They also offer a list of drinks you pay for at the end of the day. Good service, very comfortable.
They also spend all their time selling different things to eat, all rich and fresh. It's worth spending the day there.

Lounging during the day at Ipanema Beach allowed me to "feel" what Bossa Nova sounds like. The warm tropical breeze gently wafted over us as we sipped caipirinhas (without sugar) for hours, soaking up the sun. It was a time when I felt fortunate to be from the USA, as the dollar goes a long way in Rio. We went to Baraca Sonja (I hope I spelled that right) each day, and they treated us like royalty, carrying umbrellas, chairs, and towels to our preferred spot on the beach, coming by to check on us regularly, allowing us to get refills on our caipirinhas (I learned one phrase in Portuguese to ensure my drinks weren't too sweet: "sem açúcar, por favor"). We would stuble back to our rented apartment positioned perfectly between Ipanema and Copacabana Beaches intent on getting ready for dinner, we'd pass out from the hours of sun and caipirinhas, wake up around 11 p.m., and then it was the perfect time to go out and eat on Brazil time. This was all during Carnaval week in Rio, so it was incredibly lively. Paradise. I would go back again and again.

Spectacular. Every comment is superfluous. The entrances are different, we chose - as suggested by many - the entrance from the 9 and 10. Deck chairs and umbrellas cost between 3 and 5 euros. All very flexible. Enjoy the day among vendors of all kinds.

This beach is less crowded than other beaches in the area but it is still pretty fun. There are lots of vendors around. You can get some pretty delicious food and enjoy the water if you'd like to. There are chairs and umbrellas you can rent here as well.
