I must say that I was pleasantly surprised, What a beautiful beach, much superior to Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon, the area is very safe, The neighborhood is the most Chic!, with newer, modern constructions, many luxury shopping malls, and other moderate ones. , good restaurants. Yes, you should know that all the tourist attractions of RIO are 1 hour away by car. If someone wants to be in the vibe of Rio they should go to Copacabana or Ipanema. If you are looking for tranquility, or if you are traveling with children, Barra de Tijuca without a doubt! In Barra there is everything for a good vacation.

I really enjoyed staying in Barra da Tijuca. I've stayed there other times. I stayed at Posto 6. Very well located building, on the seafront, with a supermarket next to the entrance, on Avenida Lúcio Costa. We went by car, but I noticed that there is a taxi rank on the side street of the building. Easy access to several places. Kiosks with good prices and friendly service from vendors on the beach. Great restaurants but with high prices. I found it peaceful to stay on the waterfront. At night the kiosks stopped playing music and we didn't hear any noise that would disturb our sleep. That's why I always want to come back. We love it!

Nice beach; with many waves. Many beachcombers; apparently safe. Beach service a little expensive; 10 dollars for 2 chairs and an umbrella per day. Friendly people. Clean beach.

Barra da Tijuca Beach is a fantastic spot if you're looking for a less crowded, more laid-back beach experience in Rio de Janeiro. The beach stretches for miles, offering plenty of space to spread out, relax, and enjoy the sun. Its in a more "high end" side of Rio and it felt safe and less touristy.

Beautiful beach!

We went with expectations but Tijuca was even better than expected!

Fine white sand, a good stretch of beach to be comfortable, beautiful surroundings with palm trees, inns and everything you are looking for in a beach to enjoy all day.

If the water had a few more degrees, it would beat any beach in the Caribbean!

We found the paradors from 7 and below to be the best, further away near the Hyat Hotel there is not as much food on offer and paradors with umbrellas to rent.

Go without hesitation!

This beach is very beautiful and it is nice to swim as it is clean... As it is a richer area the chairs and umbrellas rental costs are quite expensive.

Barra is to Rio more or less what Miami Beach is to Miami. When Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes where singing about the Girl from Ipanema, in the mid-60s, Barra was a vast expanse of untouched beach, sand dunes, shrub and lagoons. Today Barra has Brazil's greatest concentration of shopping malls, supermarkets, not to mention central Rio's longest beach (8 kilometres). What started as a planned neighbourhood with strict limits on building height (as witnessed in the first part of Barra), gave way to large apartment blocks along the sea front (condominiums).

Barra may be gentrified, and will not quite feel like you're in Rio. It may lack character, but it's still quite a nice part of town. Most "nouveau riche" people live in Barra, including footballers, soap opera stars and the like.

The reasons to visit Barra are the following:

1- Striking scenery: the drive to Barra is very scenic, especially as you cross the last tunnel and finally reach Barra.

2- The beach is the cleanest in Rio (Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon are often polluted) and seldom gets overcrowded. The area around Pepe's beach shack (a hang glider who died in a competition) has some of the best-looking people hanging out.

3- There are some nice bars, restaurants and if the weather is bad, you can spend the day at BarraShopping mall.

4- Barra is one of the safest areas of Rio.

Whether you can dedicate time to visiting Barra depends on how long you'll be spending in Rio. If at least 4 full days, you can definitely use one day to have a look around. Hotels here are cheaper than Ipanema or Copacabana, and if you're spending a week in Rio and just want to chill on the last 2 days, it might be worth checking into (in order, from nicest to more basic) the Sheraton, Windsor or the Praia Linda hotels.

This place is terrible for pedestrians. You NEED a car and everything is just spread out. You are not in Brazil you feel like you are in the USA but they speak only Portuguese. This is just a mundane place full of towers and just shopping centres. Not very culturally enriching if you are looking for the "real Rio". I suggest going to Centro, Zona Sul, Norte or dare i say it Niteroi.

Its only saving grace are a few beaches but you have to drive through Rio's horrible traffic then through the West Zone's terrible desert of vastness and their traffic to actually get there.

You may as well stay home if you think this is the place to be... Or you need to reassess what you find fantastic.

I am from Seattle, and there we have a name for a place like Barra de Tijuca......Bellevue. In Barra you will find traffic jams (better and bigger in Rio!), beaches (some truly great ones at the far, far end of town but you must have a car to get there), shopping malls (did you REALLY come to Rio to see yet another shopping mall?), restaurants (mostly chain style operations which also have locations in Rio), and high rise apartment buildings (just like Rio). What Barra lacks is Carnaval, a soul and an attitude. Very little is accessible by walking, it is designed for those with their own cars. Many Brasilians are proud of Barra because it is shiny and new and has ample parking at the malls. Rio, on the other hand, is often dirty, old and finding parking is nearly impossible, but it has a diversity of architecture, old historic buildings, museums, art galleries, hills, favelas, the Teatro Municipal, and a thousand other attractions that Barra lacks. But, Barra will have the Metro (subway) in maybe 2016, and maybe in time for the Olympics. Then it will be quick and easy to escape from Barra if you find yourself there. I did go to Barra recently, to see the newest Batman movie at the IMAX. Yes, Barra has an IMAX, if that is what you want to do while in Brasil.

Rio itself isn't for everyone, so I suppose having Barra next door is convenient for some.
