Today I did the trail that is going into the forest with two friends of mine. One of them was there before and did the trail during the night in order to see the sunrise and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, today we were kind of unlucky because we got robbed. We went up with the motorbike taxi and the guys dropped us off at the entrance. It is the entrance next to a school and soccer field. Apparently, one of the motorbike taxi drivers followed us and while we were taking pictures after we were hiking for 20 minutes uphill he approached us with a big knife. The guy took two backpacks, my wallet, our cameras and cell phones. On our way back down through the favela we saw one of the motorbike taxi drivers wearing one of our backpacks. I just would like to make you aware that it is not the safest place in Rio and to share my experience with you. However, the view is really breathtaking and it's definitly an incredible spot.

I lived in a house on the foot of one of the Dois Irmaos, so I got to walk up the mountain in all seasons. Made a dozen trips and took guests staying at my house with me, no one was ever disappointed. The walk is not very hard, Ive seen children and septuagenarians managing it...but I also seen young men and women gasping and sweating buckets, so some stamina, if not super fitness is required. If youve got an injury or bad feet, forget it. Dont go in Havaianas. Do take a sun hat, even when you think its cloudy, do bring minimum 0.5 litres of water per person and a small bag/rucksack as some parts of the walk will require the use of both free hands. Dont go up when its rain ing or very likely to start raining, or the day after a heavy rain...theres a lot of earth and it will turn into a mud slide, some nice spots to stop take in views and make the ubiquitous selfies can turn tragic if the rock is still wet and your not goat footed. Do bring some money for a bem gelado cerveza on the walk back down through Vidigal, these hole in the wall bars will serve you up a large bottle of super cold Antartica for R$5 and you will have earned it! To get started, go to the entrance of Vidigal favela ( very friendly, if chaotic plaza) , either walk straight up the hill all the way to the campo futebol or take a moto taxi,...the moto taxi guys will see you coming and approach you first no doubt...just say Morro alto, campo do futebol...they will understand what your there for. Moto taxis used to be around R$2.50 but the charge went up to R$5 at the time of the world cup and seems to have settled there, though if you are with a local and speak portuguese you may get the old rate, in any case the ride is good value, its fast, furious and an exciting way to start. Do wear the helmet, and do bother to strap it on before they race off, dont be hurried by these guys, do hold on tight. I never heard of a moto taxi accident in the 3 yeras I lived there, but they are not for the faint hearted, the VW taxi vans that can be collected at the same spot will cost the same and take you there also, if more slowly, as the tight roads winding up into the favela can easily become clogged when theres 2 way traffic, you will have to que and wait for the van driver to be satidfied theyve got a van full before they will take off. However you get up, go to the football ground, walk through the gate , keep to the left side of the running track and football pitch, head to the far left corner, theres a small gate and a small sign telling you that you are at the start of the trail. You cant go wrong, just walk up all the way, there are no options, sometimes the trail forks in two, but only for 50 yards or so, then joins up and carries on. The summit will take 45 minites if your fit and dont require resting too much , longer if you need lots of water and selfie breaks. Take it easy and watch your footing, lots of roots and stones can get you stumbling and it will be a big headache for others to get you down if you break an ankle. The top is exposed rock and offers beautiful views East - West. On the way up you can look down upon hang gliders as they take off from the breach below, you can also look down into Rocinha favela, a very big favela. At that height you will be able to watch large vultures on the thermals too. Try going in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the strong sun. The mountain is popular, though I never experienced it as crowded, there are allways people walking up and down during daytime, but better not to go alone. Take it easy atbthe edge on the summit, sudden gusts can whip up. The views of Sao Conrado beach West and Leblon, Ipanema, Arpoador, Lagoa, the racetrack and beyond to Niteroi in the East are well worth the small effort to get up there. Possibly you will have the place to yourself if you go early morning. Dont go up at night as the paths are far too tricky even with good head torches...and robbers have been known to lurk up there after dark too. Rio is a beautiful city of views, too many tourists spend too much money and time in queues to get up mountains to enjoy them, its not always necessary to do that, this is beautiful and virtually free, plus you get to enjoy walking down through Vidigal on the return. More people should do it!

It was either the best thing or the stupidist thing I have ever done. I wanted to climb Morro Dois Irmaos for sun rise. Waking up at four, the Uber driver picked me up and we had to drive through a fevela. I was feeling confident and good until we were driving up a hill and three massive guys with AK47s blocked the road. The Uber driver turned on the interior light and gave the thumbs up. They waved us through. Great. Now they know it’s just one gringo going up at 5am. He drops me off and I almost stayed in the car. I start the trek up a rainforest filled mountain track with only my iPhone torch and the forest filled with sounds of animals waking up with their eyes glowing back at me. Slippery rocks, sheer cliff faces in the dark and fear of being mugged kept me on my toes. I made it up and it was all worth it for these views. I had the whole mountain to myself and what a last few hours in Rio! The way down was an adventure too was also crazy. I had 5 Uber drivers cancel because they didn’t want to go through the fevela. Top tips: do your research on here. Know where the track entrance is so you can find it in the dark. Bring a torch or use your iPhones (make sure it is at 100%). Only bring stuff your willing to lose if you get mugged. Bring some $ to pay the yellow jacked motorbike guys to bring you back through the fevela. They should charge 5 real but just be happy to get down safely. My yellow jacket actually took me back to my hotel in Ipanema so I have him more. Wear good hiking shoes with grip. It can get slippery and you are climbing over rocks that could take you down. I climbed Christ the Redeemer and that was much harder, but this was more challenging in the pitch black. Do not do this by yourself!! Yes I know I just did and it was amazing having the whole mountain to myself for the most amazing sunrise BUT I would have been screwed if I was mugged, shot or slipped and fell. I have never been more scared in my life but it’s the stuff memories are made of. Be safe fellow travellers

If you thought Rio was beautiful sitting on the beach, wait until you visit the top of the two brothers mountain..it is breathtaking!!
Easy+ level trail of about 1 hour will take you to the peak of the mountain. on the way to the top you will enjoy some beautiful spots that overlook "Rocinha" - the most populated favela in Rio and the surrounding neighborhood of Sao Conrrado.
To get to the beginning of the trail you first need to get to the top of the Favela Vidigal, to do that get a moto-taxi from the bottom. this would cost you 5BRL. Just say the word "Trilha" and the guy will know where to go. The favela is very safe so no worries about that.
Tips:
1. How to get to Vidigal: If you are coming using the metro, buy the integrated Metro+Buss ticket called "integração Barra Express", with that, using the metro you will get off at Ipanema General Osario, leave the station following the signs and take the Metro buss called Barra Express (5BRL). ask the buss driver to get off at Vidigal.
2. Bring water and snacks - there are no venders on the trail.
3. Go early morning or past midday to avoid the heat.
4. To get down you can find the motor-taxi at one of the streets below - just wait for one to pass.
5. There is a small kiosk on the way coming down that sell really nice Acai! it is exactly what you want after a good hike!

I've been with my wife, on a sunday morning, while we were visitng Rio.
The climb up took us about an hour and a half, and the climb down less than an hour (and we're not really in good shape or anything). It is quite hard, and you get very sweaty. Take a lot of water, and start climbing in the morning. The view is magnificent even though it was a hazy day.
Getting there: you'll need to take a taxi to the Vidigal favela, and from there you take a moto-taxi. It's very safe, and there's a lot of police in the favela. The motor takes you up the favela to the football field (the motor costs 3.5 R$ for each, up or down).
You cross the football field and there the trail starts.

First conquer your fears..... Not of the hike, but of the erroneous "dangerous favela" misconception.... Not to say you shouldn't take all the "common sensical" precautions you would while in ANY big city..... But once doing so, it will be a hike NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN!! Here's the 411:
Take a taxi to "VIDIGAL"... It's the favela directly behind the "Rio Sheraton" Hotel (for reference). Tell them it's for "climbing the hike" = "Subir a trilha". They'll drop you at the bottom (entrance of the favela), where a number of "moto taxis" will offer their services the moment they see you.... Smile big and settle the fair before accepting the helmet. Tell them "para trilha quanto costa"?! or "Para o campo de futebol, quanto e?!.....
10-20R for TWO is the avearage and depends on their perception of your Portuguese :)... I'm fluent and paid 10 for TWO bikes but noticed others who didn't speak paid double... No big deal either way, as there are no charges for the hike and you'll be supporting a safe, convenient and SUPER FUN ascent to the hike of a lifetime!!
Once settling the fair and accepting the helmet, quickly put it on (they all appear to be racing up!!), hold on for dear life and ENJOY THE RIDE. They'll zig, zag their way up inches from obstacles, other bikes and pedestrians! It's almost like a theme park ride to tell you the truth.... Gets your Adrenaline flowing for the hike!!
The bike will drop you by a soccer field and the rider will point you to the "trilha" = foot path. My wife (who is NOT very athletic) and I climbed it at a reasonable pace in just less than an hour. If I were alone, I could probably do it in :40-45, so plan a moderately hard climb. Wear hiking shoes and I would NOT advise going up if it had been raining in the last 2 days. I say that because the path (although well marked and well traveled) has numerous spots where it's grounding is dirt only, and this turns into slippery mud when wet!!
Having said that, on sunny days I would recommend an early morning hike as mid day (in the hot months) may be extremely hot. We did it in mid November on a crisp sunny day, and were profusely sweating by mid climb!! About mid way up, there usually is a very, very nice vendor for water, guarana or candy bars :)... Close to the top, you begin to see the MOST AMAZING VIEWS EVER!! "Sao Conrado" will open up on your left and you'll be left breathless (see pics)... At the top, you'll be rewarded with Ipanema, Copacabana, Lagoa, Christ the Redeemer to the left (11O'clock) and Pao de Acucar far ahead.... UN FORGETTABLE view, well worth the hike....
Upon completion, start heading down the hill and ask for "Moto Taxi" or "Kombi (van)" for the decent.... Same fair 10-20 for TWO :).... Feel free to stop at a convenient store along the way for a refreshing beer, drink ice cream or water...
Show the right attitude, smile widely and the residents will welcome you with warm hospitality, big smiles and the friendly demeanor Cariocas are known for....

22 Year Old Traveller - Not to much to review because its absolutely amazing!! 100% DO THIS. Here is how to get there and some good tips.
HOW TO GET THERE -
Go to the start of the Vidigal favela. NOTE: Vidigal Favela is a very safe favela , David Beckham and Madonna own apartments there... Lots of tourists live there , i discovered this afterwards.
Taxi = Av. Presidente Joao Goulart off the main road Av.Niemeyer
Bus = Any bus going to Leblon will go this way! First stop after you pass Sheraton Hotel (Can't miss it)
Once at the start you will find lots of Moto Taxis and Vans who will take you to the start of the treck by the football field for $10.
You can also walk up , but i recommend just walking down after the treck as it is very steep.
Once at the start of the walk its a clear pathway all the way to the top. I'm a moderatley fit man , and found it ABIT of a challenge at times but its only about 45-1 hour untill the top. Once at the top the challenge is complete , walking back down is all downhill and easy!
NOW!
When you are walking down there is one option to take a left (just after the guy selling coconuts and protein bars). Do this and continue down to the bottom.
At the bottom 2 minutes walk away is BAR DA LAJE - Ask someone where it is if you struggle.
You 100% HAVE TO GO HERE AFTERWARDS! I met a local on the walk who i went to have beers with afterwards...It is the best bar in Rio overlooking ipanema beach and the ocean. Truly is incredible. They do great food and beers/cocktails! I can't wait to go back.
After a few drinks you can get a moto taxi back down or walk down (15 minutes) through a beautiful favela.
Once at the bottom get a Bus/taxi across the road back to wherever you are.
-Total time it took was about 2-3 hours. I ended up walking down the favela at night because we stayed at the bar for about 6 hours :)

Not the easiest summit to visit, but the views reward the effort of getting there. Get a bus that goes past the access road into Vidigal favela, and then a motor cylce "taxi" (you'll see a group of riders about 25m up the road - just say Trilha Dois Irmaos, they know were to go, and hold on tight - these riders are skilled and know what they're doing - $R10) to take you up through Vidigal to the point where the trail starts - straight across the sports ground from the access gate. The trail is easy to follow, but gets a bit steep for a while (sensible footwear - I had no problem in trainers, but others were wearing crocs or even flip flops!). Could be difficult if the trail is wet, so avoid if it's been raining recently. Heat and humidity may tire you if you're not used to these conditions - take at least 1ltr water. Sumit views are amazing. Allow time to enjoy. No significant exposure on way up, or even at the summit. Vidigal seemed safe enough to walk back through on way down, although it's easy to flag down a motor cycle taxi if you want. If you're going up there to watch the sunset, then think about how you're going to get back down the track in the dark...

If you are looking for the best views of Rio De Janeiro & a fun, Brazilian adventure - this is for you!
Not only do you get to experience a 40 minute jungle trek, offering 360 degree views of Rio, but you get to start your adventure off in Vidigal Favela. A pacified community, where you can really see how a lot of locals in Rio live.
I have done this hike 3 times & always felt very safe. It has always taken me about 50 minutes to reach the top (including the moto-taxi at the start) & stopping for pictures on the trek.
MY TIPS:
-Catch a taxi to the start of Vidigal Favela. If you want to talk from Ipanema beach, it will take you approximately 30 minutes. Remember, just like anywhere in South America, always keep your belongings hidden & secure.
-Arrive 1 hr before sunrise if you want to see the sunrise at the top
-Jump on one of the moto-taxis & tell them you are here for the DOIS IRMAOS hike. Write it down if you struggle with the accent, but chances are you will look like a gringo & they will know where to take you. Do not pull your camera out as you are driving through Vidigal Favela. This is out of respect to the people who live there, the locals don’t mind you being there, but remember this is their home, community & way of life.
-They will drop you to the starting point of the hike, right by the soccer fields at the top of Vidigal Favela.
-Follow the foot track you find until you reach the top. About 20 minutes into the trek you will see Rocina Favela to your left (Latin America's largest Favela). This is approximately half way.
Chances are you will be at the top with only a few other people.
Enjoy the view, it really is a one of a kind :)

After much contemplation, my wife and I decided to hike Morro Dois Irmaos on our own without a tour company and it turned out to be much more simple and safe than we thought. Take a cab or uber to the entrance of Vidigal Favela. You will immediately see moto-taxi drivers with safety vests along with quite a few police officers. Up until arriving here, my wife had sworn that she would not take a moto-taxi, but upon seeing that the drivers were handing out helmets to passengers and not being pushy we felt safe enough to do it. They charged us 5R each (one way) and contrary to other posts, drove at a reasonable and safe speed. Say "trilha" at the start of the ride and they will drop you off at the entrance to a fenced in football field. Walk straight behind the field towards the outdoor gym equipment and the trail begins there. The hike was moderately challenging and took us about 45 minutes to the top, including stops along the way to take photos. Along the way we crossed paths with many others doing the hike without a tour guide. It is a good idea to wear good shoes as portions of the trail can be slippery. At the top there are people selling snacks and drinks. The views, both at the top and at various points along the trail are some of the best that we saw in Rio. Make sure to stop 3/4 of the way up to take in the view Rocinha favela directly below. On the way down we stopped to watch a soccer match on the turf field and then caught moto-taxis for the ride down that had just dropped off some other hikers. In the end, we saved a lot of money doing this on our own vs. through a tour company.

Has anyone does this as a group tour at all? If so was it worth the money? I was wondering if I am better off booking this as a group tour via my hotel or just do the trip myself and cut out the middle man?
I can book this trip through the concierge at the hotel but it will be 310R$. Is it worth paying that or just doing it myself? I will be travelling on my own so the only thing putting me off doing this trip on my own is having to travel through the favela & using moto taxi’s.
Any help would be much appreciated.

It honestly felt very safe going through the favela. Uber drops you to the bottom of the favela, then there were police cas and the moto-taxi people all in an area at the bottom. There was no-one other than tourists doing the hike on the trail, the only part of concern would be when you arrive back at the top of the favela waiting for a moto-taxi to arrive. There is a little guy with a shop there as a local, so you wouldn't be completely alone, although you may have to wait 10mins or so. I'm quite risk averse, and I did it without the tour guide.

As vãs continuam circulando entre o leblon e o vidigal. Sugiro que verifique se há indices de violência antes de fazer a trilha do morro dois irmãos.
Para chegar ate "o pé" de onde começa a trilha você pode ir de moto taxi ou combi. Evite fazer a trilha se a semana foi chovosa pois lá tem bastante terra que irá dificultar sua subida.
O morro dois irmãos tem umas das vistas mais bonitas do Rio de janeiro
