Great live music - terrible management systems
Feb. 2019
Unquestionably a fun place for live music... however they have a entry & exit system that management needs to change. Once you enter, you present your credit card and then get issued a red charge card, which is okay, but still odd. Thereafter when you conclude the evening using this in house card, you proceed to an area, stand in line on bottom floor to settle your bill. Fine... I assume we are done now and can leave. NOPE! Now you go to a 3rd line, to once again show this card (which they kept at the 2nd line) and then once again wait in a line, they verify what their other desk did or did not do correctly... this was a fiasco. At this 3rd and final exit line, they detained/imprisoned us for nearly an hour till they could verify. Someone in their system lost our cards which was ridiculous. All of this was unnecessary and a waste of our groups time. After an hour of them not letting us out, we called the police as this was highly illegal to imprison guests and not give back our card.. after we called the police, then they moved faster. Too many other great places to have fun in Rio that does not abuse and bully customers. This morning I also woke to a broad range of random unauthorized credit card charges... something very odd about the timing of providing our credit card that they held and then suddenly same timing random credit card charges. Our entire group will be filing complaints with the Tourism & other government authorities in Rio on this venue. Bottom line - DO NOT GO!

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Centro
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

OMG - this place is a total dirt hole. The music is fun, but felt like high school or college. The bathrooms had such a horrible smell and appeared no one cleaned them for years.
They also had some stupid concept of paying your tab with their in house tab system. Whatever manager came up with this idea should be fired. It doesn't take long to piss off the entire tourism sector and word spreads fast. The place just got black listed to the entire cruise line industry which they will find out in long run... its now on the "not trusted list".

Such a fun fun area to be in. Papa is full of life, great music, great bars, all ages and sizes and all full of good cheer.

Good house with several atmospheres to eat well, good drink, nightclub, a floor for live shows and good space for dancing. Ambiance for both family and boyfriend celebrations, all with a present and discreet security team. Lots of taxis on exit. The owner Carlinhos de Jejsus is a respected man in the artistic medium of shows and excels in the quality of his establishments. I'm good.

We went on a Saturday with a group of friends from 10 PM to 1 AM on May. The the band was good and the food so so. The main issue was that the place is very big and although there were people inside (including us) having fun it seemed some how empty. Maybe it was early... We found the streets in Lapa dark and empty, not what we expected. Maybe it was the time of the year

Lapa is a crazy good time. Extremely busy streets filled with people of all ages. Plenty of places to club, eat and drink.

Just be careful. The busyness allows for allow of pickpockets to have a field day. But it is worth the small risk.

good club in the heart of lapa...the music is good...there are 3 floors to the club but the middle floor is just pool tables and not for dancing and the top floor is quite small.
plays good music and the beers are relatively cheap here so it wont cost too much for a night out.

They card everyone so bring your passport or ID.
This establishment has 3 floors. The first floor has live music and you can order food and drinks. 2nd floor has various pool tables. 3rd floor has a d.j. playing popular Brazilian music.
Live music is on the 1st floor until approximately midnight. The 3rd floor does not open until 1 a.m.
Everybody migrates to the 3rd floor when it opens and it becomes crowded. Wall to wall people. No dancing. Maybe some swaying to the music.
Unless you go with a group of people you already know you will not be talking with anybody. Or meeting anybody new. It is literally wall-to-wall, shoulder to shoulder people.

We were deeply disappointed with this place having read great reviews beforehand. Initially we were refused entry for not having passport/ID with us. The ID applies to everyone and is not just to prove age. We returned to our hotel nearby to collect ID and paid 30 reals each to get in. Once inside there was karaoke going on on the ground floor. No other music on other floors. Drinks we reasonably priced but you had to hand over a drink credit card every time you wanted one and then paid for all drinks at the end of the night using the card at cashier desks at the back of the club. The paid card then acted as your exit visa. I prefer to pay as I go and have no idea what would happen if you lost the card. Entirely possible that a huge bill could be racked up in your name. As the evening progressed, a couple of live bands came on. No recognisable music to us. Presumably it was Brazilian. Anyway, nothing improved so we left. We'd read that this place played a mixture of European and Brazilian music and that different levels had different music. None of this was true on the night we were there.

This huge club is all about Brazilean music and Brazilean drinks, mixed with a great atmosphere without the dizzy crowds.
