Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Tour the historic center of Rio de Janeiro and you will be making a time trip. It is not free that Rio de Janeiro continues to be, year after year, one of the most visited Brazilian cities. In a single day and walks through pleasant places, buildings and monuments you visualize five centuries of history, from the arrival of African slaves, the official residence of the royal family of Portugal and coming to the time of the Proclamation of the Republic (not to forget the update to the present day). What can be highlighted in this region are the Arcos da Lapa, the Tiradentes Palace (now City Hall of Rio de Janeiro), the Imperial Palace, the Theatro (his official name as at the time) Municipal. Access is very easy, either by bus, VLT, or subway (Largo da Carioca stations, or Cinelandia) or by application transport. The view of the Municipal Theatre is imposing and its facade was inspired by the Paris Opera (there are guided tours). The Imperial Palace is a building built in the 18th century for the residence of the governors of the Capitania do Rio de Janeiro (now a cultural center); the Arcos da Lapa was the largest architectural work of the Brazilian colonial period (it was originally an aqueduct, bringing water from the river of Carioca to the city, in Largo da Carioca); the Tiradentes Palace was inaugurated in 1926 to serve as the seat of the National Congress, when Rio was the capital of the country, before Brasília (now the Legislative Assembly). That is, there is a lot to see, walking and enjoying architectural beauties and history. Rule number one: comfortable shoes, sunscreen and water. If you need to replenish more "strongly", the Colombo Confectionery is region and as it was built in 1824, your coffee will also have a historic flavor. I highly recommend.

The best way to tackle the historical city centre is to take a walking tour.

You will learn more about Rio and how the city developed. The historical centre also has fascinating buildings, museums, churches, statutes.

It is also useful to have a guide as sadly the extensive poverty is visible in the city centre as well as elsewhere in Rio.

Rio de Janeiro is the worst city I have ever visited. I’ve visited plenty of 3rd world cities but this tops the lot.

Traffic from hell, trash and graffiti everywhere. Lawless chaos. It is not inviting of tourists with virtually no tourist information and no parking near the major attractions.

It really is a city where both humanitarians and environmentalists unite in their despair.

If you do go, for God’s sake don’t hire a car. We spent 3 days visiting Rio, 16hours of that was spent in traffic jams. We didn’t manage to get to a beach (no parking), we were unable to navigate the slip roads of 5 lanes of traffic to visit the stadium, and the hop on hop off bus doesn’t allow you to hop on nor off.

Go to Santiago instead.

We went walking around the historic centre in the week before carnival, so it was quite crowded and hot. But the overwhelming impression was that the centre is really dirty, with garbage in the streets. On top of this the historic buildings were mostly derelict upper floors over fleapit junk shops. Very disappointing that the city doesn't seem to care about looking after its buildings - really looks like a third world country.

If you only do one thing in Rio you must do the cable car which is one of the smoothest climbs and so easy
You really feel you are on top of the world and are even higher than the aeroplanes that fly by readying themselves to land
The views are amazing and unforgettable trust me you won’t be disappointed

I love Rio. The historic city is so interesting with an awful history with the slave trade it has just started to embrace.

The buildings are beautiful and you can see the historic port area compared to where the land has been reclaimed in the last few years.

Unesco world heritage site is lovely and has lots of interpretation in multiple languages.

Take time to see this while in Rio it's the history and the heart of the whole City

Everywhere smells of pee, the streets and avenues are very dirty. Other than that, the city is very beautiful and fun. Anyone can pee anywhere easily, be careful where you step :)
