Neighbourhood: Urca
Urca is one of the oldest areas in Rio. Known for its incredible views of the city, the neighbourhood runs along Guanabara bay, providing visitors with an opportunity to watch the sunset from one of Rio’s greatest natural treasures: Sugarloaf Mountain (Pao de Acucar). It is said that the locals in Urca are “bon vivant,” which is one of the reasons the area attracts people of all styles and ages. Urca is the perfect place to take a stroll and appreciate the area’s beautiful architecture, enjoy a cocktail and some delicious seafood pastries at a bar, or bring a bottle of wine and enjoy it while sitting anywhere along the stone seawall known as the “mureta.”

Don't confuse this route with the trail to Urca! This is NOT a walking/tracking trail, this is a CLIMBING route. I went there alone, trusting the reviews here.
There are a couple of warning labels at the beginning. They say you need special equipment for alpinism and a guide and that's true. I am brave and strong and I went like 2/3 of the way up, although it was really really dangerous (warning labels said there were some accidents, even fatal ones, I believe its true too). But I had to stop at the point there the wall was almost vertical and there were some metal rings for ropes but no ropes. It was just impossible to climb further without any equipment so I just went back down.
It was challenging and scary, but as I believed the reviews I was trying my best as long as possible!
And I wanna say it was SOOO beautiful! Very cool views, lots of lizards and vultures (they were watching me with clear interest), bromelias and lianas...
I recommend to go with equipment and a guide (definitely not alone), you need ropes, good shoes and gloves (I burned my hands with fiery rocks).
As a nature lover I enjoyed being so away from civilization!

Please notice that there is a very easy and free trail to the Urca hill (the first cable car station) .
NOTE : the Urca Hill trail is different from the exposed (although easy) and technical climbing route that goes right to the top of Sugar Loaf. If you are not a climber, I srtrongly reccomend hiring a guide ( the Costão route)

Fabulous day blessed with good weather and clear views. Well looked after by multi-lingual guides. Lunch was an experience not to be missed. Tiring but well worth it!

Lots of people coming to Rio for the Olympics, and this is a place you should not miss during a sunny morning. In spite of taking the cable car to the Pao de Acucar (Sugar Loaf) top, go to the Claudio Coutinho trail, on the left side of Praia Vermelha. It is a 30 to 40 minutes’ trail to the top of the first mountain. On the way up you will enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Guanabara Bay. When on the top of Sugar Loaf mountain, you will be able to look around and find out why this city is called Cidade Maravilhosa.

Pão de açucar is one of the best places in Rio, there are so many animals. The restaurants are very nice and the trip is cozy, the landscapes are awsome. There is a very good place to go and relax. The monkeys are funny and the birds are beutiful

The typical Rio postcards represent this unusual shape hill, that dominates the City like a huge sugar loaf , round and funny in the district of Urca. You get there through a "teleferico" that bring you up two different hills, to reach the summit. The wonderful sunny and windy day, the fact that I was lucky enough not to have a heavy queue ( it seems that you can line for 2 hours to get up) made my experience really great. I took the time to stay and profit about the calm and the incredible sight, lying on a wooden sun bed under a tree and I really loved up there. You see every detail of the City, and it's not jammed as Corcovado. You can also walk in the gardens/woods.
The ticket is 76 Br R around 24$.Up there you can even take an helicopter for an overview fly on the City. Double check and book in advance.Restaurants and gift shops availables.

We enjoyed our trip up, the views of the surrounding area are great, and we got some amazing pictures of the white Christ poking through the clouds. This would not have been as enjoyable if it had been cloudy though.

Trail starts on the left side of praia vermelha. An easy paved trail. Along the left side a trail goes to the top of Urca (the lower mountain that is the first cable car stop on the way to pao de acucar). This trail was under some reconstruction when we were there so we did not take this trail and we have already been on top of Urca from the cable car. Followed the trail to the paving ended. Along the way were beautiful views for praia vermelha and the bay. Lots of monkeys and birds. Forget we were in the city, it was so peaceful. At the pavement end there is a large concrete cylinder like a water tank. You can goe around the left side of it and follow a small dirt tail around and up the back side of pao de acucar. We followed a small distance but stopped when we were not comfortable with the conditions and the flip flop we were wearing. Turned around and headed back. On the way back almost stepped on a small coral snake on the trail. If you go take care and watch out, it is truly a natural habitat in the middle of a bid city. Loved it and will go again with more appropriate footwear.

I did this trail with my husband and my two children, ages 6 and 3 years. I had already done the trail before, but this was the first time I took the kids. They loved it. It took us about 1 hour since we stopped along the way to take pictures and enjoy the scenery. We chose to return by cable car and it was perfect: wonderful experience and breathtaking views. We loved it.
