Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Most websites recommend a guide but as most things in Brazil organising such takes time. So we decided to walk the path up and down without a guide.
For those who are happy with the historic explanations one can find online and who are just interested in a nice hike this is probably the best solution. Even for slow walkers it should not take more than 1h30 total time. Once you get to a small assembly of houses the path is finished and you should come back.
The beginning of the path is situated just opposite the 'Engenho do ouro paraty', a cachaça distillery that offers tastings and is perfect for a quick visit. (It also has a small restaurant attached)
MUST DO FOR AFTER THE HIKE: Go to the waterfall which is also nearby. You can take a bath in the river and use a massive rock as a natural waterslide. A bit further up the river you'll cross a hanging bridge to get to the 'Tazan bar' that serves cold drinks and food in a very idyllic environment.

We have been staying at Backpackers House in Paraty and the owner, Pablo, took us on a tour of the Gold Trail as a group... We all had a great day out! Firstly he took us to some smaller rocks to slide into the water and a place where you can jump off some high rocks into a deep pool below, then to the toboga falls which were fantastic! There was a great atmosphere there with tourists and locals all laughing together as everyone took it in turns to go down - its incredibly slippy and we couldn't believe the locals literally surfing down these water slopes! We ordered a meal from the restaurant next to the falls before we went swimming so when we came back it was ready for us - great food and you got lots of it so certainly worth the price (about £10 a head).
Afterwards we went to the distillery where we saw cachaca being made and got to taste all of the different varieties. There was a lovely little gift shop at the end too.
This was a fab day trip of you don't mind getting a bit wet and love the outdoors!
Tip - pick a warm and ideally sunny day for your trip as you'll get cold splashing about in the water otherwise!

This is the way , that the gold from Minas Gerais arrives at Paraty to be sent to Portugal . There is Jeeps that take you all the way up the mointains , or if you want , you can go by foot ( one full day ) .
Strongly recommend .

The Gold Path/Trail (Caminho do Ouro in Portuguese) was one of the highlights of our trip to Paraty. We booked a trip to the Path through one of the travel agents in the old center of Paraty, Paraty Adventure. Our guide, called Oscar, was very knowledgeable about both the fascinating history of the area and the fauna and flora of the Atlantic rainforest. He shared interesting bits of information about many of the animals (yay, hummingbirds!), fruits and plants we encountered on our trip along the centuries-old stone path. This is a great chance to get close to the rainforest. The Path also played an important role in Brazilian, and even world history, as many of the riches adorning European capitals travelled through here on their way to Europe. We had the area completely to ourselves, and in general not many tourists seem to visit the Gold Trail, which is a real shame. Safety didn't seem to be an issue, if this would be holding some people back. I would really recommend this often underrated excursion. Be sure to book a tour through one of the travel agents, though, as you can not visit the Gold Path by yourself.
In the area, there are also some waterfalls and cachaça distilleries, and visiting these can easily be combined with the Trail itself.

We went up a bit to get to an Ingenio to see how cashasa was made. Very interesting! Had an enormous lunch there and then crossed over the road to an excellent little walk to some falls called "tobogan" loved it!

we spent one morning doing the gold trail / caminho do ouro with Harry from paraty explorer. Even though he is from Buenos Aires his grandfather was from scotland which meant we had plenty to talk about!
He was very knowledgeable about the history of paraty and brasil as well as the natural environment of the atlantic forest. At the end of the trail I had a couple of goes on the natural rock water slide which was geat fun. After this we visited the cachaca distillery for some tasting and bought a few bottles. A very enjoyable trip and highly recommended.

Bom dia, gostaria de saber se o passeio pelo caminho do ouro requer muito esforço? Seria uma trilha de quanto tempo mais ou menos e que nÃvel? Tem muita subida? Ela passa pelas cachoeiras e pelos alambiques?
