Overview
More
Largest hydroelectric power plant in the world, Itaipu is the current world record holder in power generation and is considered one of the 7 wonders of modern engineering. Built on the Parana River, the seventh largest river in the world, between Brazil and Paraguay, it is 8 km wide, has a maximum height of 196 m and a lake of 1350 km². Itaipu enchants not only for the dimensions and technical aspects, but also for being a vanguard in sustainability and tourism, with several options of visits, from the classic Panoramic Tour and the award-winning Special Tour, that leads to the interior of the plant, to boat trips on the lake and night tours of the plant. Visiting Itaipu is to know, closely, what human capacity can accomplish.

We did this as part of a day trip into Paraguay. It was really interesting and well organised. Really glad we went and would recommend it to others.

Ok activity for a day in the area not going to the parks. Requires some 2h in total if you travel with kids and do the “scenic tour”. If no kids traveling, maybe specialty tours are more interesting.

After seeing a video explaining the way and effort used to construct the hydroelectryc facility you go for a live visiting. You can go for two different types of visit: indoor and outdoor. Indoor only for people above 14 years old.

The biggest hydro power plant producing electricity in the world deserves a visit. The visit can take one to the depth of the construction, plant control, and amazing sight seeing of the damn and the lake.

I got the bus number from my hotel front desk along with a map showing the routes. If you have Wifi, the bus routes are also shown on the website of the transit company for Foz do Iguacu.
