Cidade velha is a great place to visit. Just don't go at night or wearing jewelry, it is a shady part of town, but highly recommend you go and sit by the river sipping coconut water.

The old town is just breath-taking, but you should rather not walk there alone. Great colonial style of the buildings, you can still smell the rests of it grandiose times... Worth spending some 4-5 hours there, at least

Lots of old buildings, some of which have now been restored. Don´t wander around away from the main sights after dark, it can be dangerous.
