Interesting gold mine
Sep. 2019
Conveniently located on the road from Ouro Preto to Marianna. You enter the mine on a cable train. When you reach the bottom of the mine you can explore the passages (not very far!) with a guide. We arrived when there was no english guide available (I think you have to book the guide in one of the towns and are not provided by the mine).
We found it interesting even though we couldn't understand the commentary,
You can see bits of gold glittering in the rock and there was scuba diving in the cave at the bottom of the mine.

Amazing Gold Mine!
Dec. 2019
It is an unique experience to ride a cart down an old gold mine. It is the most exciting visit on the region of the Historical Cities of Brazil in Mariana and Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais.

Gold mine
May 2019 • Solo
This gold mine was excavated with industrial means, mainly by British people. Although it is the largest of its kind, the visit does not extend very far into the mine. The ride in and out of the mine by cable car is fun. Inside one can see an underground pool of water, and several minerals in the walls of the mine. Compared to the coal and iron ore mines in Germany, these mines are very small.

Great

Visiting the mine was great but I wished we could have gone deeper. My Portuguese isn't good but I could understand the informations provided by the guide. The visit takes around 45 minutes.

down an old gold mine
Nov. 2017 • Solo
Visitors to Ouro Preto (Black Gold) and its surroundings, will come for the beautiful colonial architecture of the place and its grand churches in the typical Baroco Mineiro style. This town had once been one of the richest and most populous places in the world, and it all came from the gold, once discovered here. So to go to a gold mine is part of the experience.

Probably the most popular old mine to visit is the one between Ouro Preto and Mariana, called 'Minas de Passagem', which was still functioning until 1985. After paying an entrance fee of R$ 40 one can go to a small museum and then descend by an open old miner's cart for a distance of 375m to a difference in altitude of 150m.

A guide comes along, who only gives explanations in Portuguese. Once down and walking around one can see a small lake. Temperature is a pleasant 17°-20°, thus no special clothing has to be taken along. All in all nothing overwhelming, especially if one has seen mines like Wieliczka in Poland a short time ago, as I did..

Well-worth visiting, but maybe do some research before
Aug. 2017 • Couples
We really enjoyed the visit and got a lot out of the guided tour. It acts as a complement to whatever you may see or read while visiting Ouro Preto. It was on our way between Ouro Preto and Mariana, so it was more of a last minute decision to stop, than a pre-planned trip.
As other reviewers note, the tickets are indeed on the high side and we later saw that there other mines in the region with less expensive tickets. Is it worth going for one of the cheaper ones, or does this one have something more to offer (hence the highest ticket price)? Maybe it's worth researching a bit more before deciding...

Interesting, but pricey compared to some tourist attractions
Apr. 2017 • Friends
If you're interested in learning more about Brazil's mining history, this is a good place to go. It's a short drive from Ouro Preto (about 15 minutes), although it may be difficult to access without a car. Although there is a bus stop near the entrance, the roads seemed fairly empty as we were driving there. It costs 60 reais to enter, and this includes a trip into the mine (on a cable-suspended car) and a tour guide. I think they do not accept card, so have cash ready. Our tour guide was excellent — and spoke in both Portuguese and English.

There is also a dive center for the underground lake, and dives can be arranged in advance.

A view of Brazilian Mining history
Apr. 2017 • Family
It is an interesting experience, mostly who likes Brasil´s History or Mining issues.
The tickets are expensive for the short visit, but going down the mine, you can see the beauty and touch the rocks and know a lilltle more the Portuguese and English colonization in that area. Credit cards are not accepted.

Interesting but over priced
Mar. 2017 • Friends
First of all i have to say that if you go to ouro preto you should visit a gold mine. That being said, even though i did enjoy my visit it was extremely over priced. You have to pay cash as there is no card option. It was fun going down the mine in the cart but i'm not sure if it is very safe. Down the mine there isn't really much to see, our guide was quite well informed and explained everything nicely and was very knowledgeable about answering any questions. I would say it's worth the visit but be prepared to over pay for it
