I have been to pretty much all churches in Rome, yet can't remember one with so much gold inside. It really makes for some beautiful pics.

This is not what you expect of a Franciscan convent devoted to work and prayer in poverty and chastity, but when the monks came to Brazil they lost most of their ideals, acquired African slaves, native concubines, discovered gold and the result is this church. The wood carvings are made by natives, African slaves and craftsmen from other Portuguese colonies... More

This church doesn't look much from inside as there are much nicer church facades in Salvador, but the beauty of this religious building is on the inside, the convent is plastered with individual and different tiles in a Dutch Portuguese style and the inside of the proper church is absolutely covered in gold leaf from top to bottom with very... San Francisco church is found in thr historic Pelorinho area of Salvador. From outside it will look like a plain church but inside will draw your breath away.Normally there is a small fee but if you are visiting when there is a service the doors will be open and you can see it free.

This church will take your breath away when you walk inside. Does not take long to see it, approx. 1 hour. In the heart of Pelourinho, the old city, easy to find.

An incredible example of a church. The architecture is very ornate and well preserved given the age. Certainly take the tour for the full experience.

This church was absolutely amazing - I have never seen so much gold in one place. If you are in Salvador, this is a MUST see! Pictures do not do it justice.

This is an amazing church with rich history. The paintings, the architecture, the drawings and the amount of gold are unbelievable. We were fortunate to have an English speaking guide who took us on an hour tour of the church.
