Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

visited this popular market on a sunday when it was full of people, smells, local colour and loved it, is a real taste of salvador, raw and lively with an array of fruits and stuff from the region. find a restaurant and you will likely have a great meal for very little money. try the moqueca made from local rock fish, octopus and prawns,,,,,wonderful.

Great place to take pictures, recommended by my b&b owners. They sell mostly fruit, vegs and meat here. The colours are amazing but the smells can be intrusive and if you are a strict vegetarian you may wish to avoid this

Being there last week, we found it not only interesting, but also mysteriously attractive.
Despite the hot weather, the seafood ingredients did not smell, they seemed to be fresh!
What surprised more was the number of religious articles being offered in several stores.
Another point to be made is the people who work there, they are really hardworking!
There one finds the real Bahia, we were served by Samuel such an outgoing vendor, who said that whether we want to move to Bahia, we were welcome!

It is worth paying a visit!

I visited this market as part of a shore excursion from Salvador. This market had many different food stuffs as well as other items such as clothing and crafts. This is probably the worst market I have seen in the world. It was grubby and smelly. There are also many unsavory characters hanging around outside of the market. I just did not feel safe inside or outside of this market. I made sure that I kept my cross-body purse close to me and did not open it. I did tell my tour guide what I thought about the situation.

This can be just another market, as another reviewer noted, but what "got me" is that this is the place most Candomble practitioners go to get their offering animals, candles, and even costumes. This place is unique in that it merges a farmers' market with a massive religious artifacts supply market.

That is raw Bahia as you can only see in Pierre Verger's pictures or in Jorge Amado's books. This is where baianos go for shopping. It's very cheap but don't expect to find a clean market. This one is dirty. And still beautiful. You can try all sorts of tropical fruits and vegetables that Brazil has. Absolutely worth it!

If you're like me, and you seek out markets wherever you go, I'm sure you'll like it. It definitely is an assault on the senses in ever way. An endless network with something surprising around every corner. Stay alert though, people are pushing carts and carrying things in all directions so stopping to take photos isn't always the best idea. As with some parts of Salvador (and other big cities around the world) it might not be the safest spot though, so you have to be open to risk. An armored car courier was shot and killed the day we were there, and we literally almost stepped in his blood. I was just thinking it was animal blood, but then we looked up and saw and ambulance and a news crew.

Note: if you're asking for directions, it's not a "mercado" it's "Feira de São Joaquim."

We had the best experience in this market! Fresh fruits, vegetable, food and many more.....People are very modest and kind. We stopped by the Jaca (jack fruit) stand and the owner even sang for us. Then we headed to Bar da Angela for another great service and food experience. Thank you, Tica for a great service!!

As with many South American markets interesting but rather grubby and chaotic. Prices low and large range of fruit vegetables and spices. Outside the market I was mugged and had my property stollen and my wrist bruised in a struggle. We were on a cruise ship and sadly I was not alone in being robbed, some other people did actually suffer more serious injuries. Not a nice town, I would not recommend. But have to say the safety in the next town of Recife was the same!
