Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

As a non-religious person I was interested in observing this majestic looking church, which granted looks like most cathedrals do. Nevertheless, I found it to be nicely done. No candles were available inside though! Decent art though...

Compared to other Cathedrals this building is interesting in its simplicity of design.
Make sure to see the paintings of the martyred.

We were overwhelmed by the modern paintings in this church along the side walls. The first on the left, of Franciscan brothers taking away guns from those who had inflicted violence against the community and against the church during 20th century struggles. Then in a back chapel, a painting of the 8 brothers, faces clear and distinct, local martyrs. After visiting the previous day Tirana's museum with its display of 20th century persecution against religious leaders, this visit was a sober reminder of the struggle of Albanian people.

A cathedral that is not so prominent with its splendor and rich attributes as its history. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Stephen. During the time of Communist dictator E. Hodza, who forbade the country's religion by declaring that Albania was the only valley of atheists in the world, this church was transformed into a Palace of Sports, rebuilt as a gym and used for volleyball.
In 1990 the Cathedral was reopened and the first mass in the country since 1967 was held in the cathedral and in 1993 it was visited by Pope John Paul II.
It is 74 meters long, 50 meters wide and the height 23 meters.
The church has preserved the original ceilings, a copy of Christ's floating crucifixion, and a portrait of Mother Teresa.

My husband and I just walked in to take a look. An old lady was trying to tell me about Jesus with Local language. She blessed me. That was a good part. The bad part is my friend from the same tour group told us they asked them $25 just to walk in. Church should not charge people. It is a shame we are lucky that the person who charge fee was not there.

Entrance to the church via the Diocesan Museum at the back of the building in the old Sacristy. Stunning ceiling. Just another unbelievable story of the church being used as a sports facility during the 'atheist times'. The Balkan never ceases to amaze.

While visiting Shkodra with friends, and stayed at the nearby Rose Garden hotel, visited on an early Sunday morning the Cathedral and was impressed to see so many believers attend the church at that early hour for prayer. The atmosphere was great. One local believer explained me the history of the church when it was built 6 representatives decided about the size of the church and this became the largest Catholic Church in the Balkans. During the Communist era this church was turned into a sports hall.

There is nothing of great importance here but as it was a short walk from the Hotel Tradita where we were staying, we decided to have a quick visit. The cathedral is surprisingly large for such a small town, but a 10 minute viewing suffices

This museum presents a historical background to Albania and Shkoder in particularly. It deals with the injustices dealt out to those who did not agree with the communist regime's atheist views.
Albania the only country to declare itself an atheist state.
We had a guided tour, about half an hour from an enthusiastic guide in English.
The museum is free.

Was the exterior of this church covered over during the atheist era?
