- T-SGlobetrottersPreston, United Kingdom3,654 contributionsThe best views of any castle we visited on our tripIf travelling by car, access to the site can be slightly tricky. The narrow road up to the castle eventually reaches a small car park but this only holds 12 cars plus another four to six vehicles on areas just off the road on the way up. We arrived mid-morning to find the road at the bottom on the hill blocked with large tour buses but there was ample street parking available nearby and it is a 10 to 15 minute uphill walk to the top. Another problem with the car park is that it gets blocked by small mini buses in the morning and as there is nowhere to turn, this entails reversing back down the hill to the first bend. We concluded the bus blockage actually did us a favour. Once up there the entrance fee is 400 lek. We would recommend checking tickets, we were actually given student tickets priced at 120 lek despite handing over full price money. We pointed this out to the collector who then printed tickets with the correct price, presumably this is some form of scam. Once up there the castle is very good. Its position gives it marvellous 360° views, the best of any castle we visited in Albania. This is mainly the reason for visiting Roxafa. Most of the buildings are ruins from the Venetian and Ottoman periods although there is a restored building in the middle of the site which houses the historical museum (separate charge) which is worth a look. There is also a small cafe. Including the museum, we spent a couple of hours here.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 October 2023
- Philipp RKarlsruhe, Germany124 contributionsNice castle overlook the city of ShkodërWe actually liked it more than we expected! Not only the views from the castle to the surrounding city are nice, but also the castle itself. It’s in good shape and considering the surrounding city area, it’s really clean. The entrance fee of 400 Lekë for adults is fair. If you’re elderly or for any other reasons have problems with walking, just be aware that the floor is quite slippery and uneven in some parts. Btw we came here by taxi which cost us hefty 8 € after negotiation, which is why we decided to walk back to the city (about 4 km).Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 October 2023
- Space0neToronto, Canada106 contributionsWorth VisitingIt was easy to get here by Taxi from the town in front of the tourist office, it drove up to the Castle. From the ticket office to the top is still a long uphill walk on river rocks. Once in the castle it’s easy walk with view of the lake etc. the little museum is really worth visiting, it opens at 10, the castle opens at 9. There is a small cafe and toilets. Try and get there early before the tours. Getting back from the castle is a long hike down. After waiting for a taxi, I offered to pay a tourist for a ride down in their car. They dropped us off at the circle and we walk back to our hotel, which was next to the tourist office. It’s a busy street with shops so the walk doesn’t seem that long.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2023

Very small parking at the castle, in busy periods road blocked by parked cars. Better park down and walk, around 7-8 minutes.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 23 February 2024

- phil D13 contributionsOk castle, nice viewFirst of all, the price is only 400 lek (€4). It's a nice but spicy walk to the castle. Once you're in you have a really nice view, that alone is worth the 400 lek. The castle (ruin) itself is ok but not that special, it lacks a bit information to be honest. But for that amount of money it's worth a visitVisited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 30 July 2024

Coming from rural Montana all the way to bustling Shkodër I doubted my sanity, but the serenity and beauty of the Rozafa Castle really warmed me up to Albanian life. We visited on a bright sunny morning that turned nasty cold and overcast, so be forewarned. Rozafa is an exposed hill that offers magnificent views of three valleys, three rivers, multiple mosques and mountains galore. Oh yeah, it has this great huge castle that still stands impressive with towers, walls and archways. We took refuge by the heaters and fire of the cafe and its coffee. We caught the city bus to and fro. Just make sure you go back to the same Rozafa bus stop because the next one closer to town is a long mile walk away. Plan to spend plenty of time. There may not be a better view in Albania!

Rozafa is indeed a monumental ruin. I can't even imagine what this castle looked like in its heyday. Today we can see only the remains of the walls. From Rozafa there is a beautiful view of the city of Shkoder and Lake Skadar. Cobbled paths are very slippery in places. I do not recommend visiting Rozafa to people who have walking problems. The ascent would be really challenging for them.
There is a small museum and restaurant within the ruins.
The entrance fee is different for locals and for tourists. Foreigners pay 200 lek for entry and locals 100 lek.

We drove all around the city, and this was the most spectacular views we had. The castle and ots walls go for what seems forever! It sits on the hills overlooking the city, mountain, and lake. Just stunning views, and really nice architecture!

This castle was enjoyable to visit. We learned quite a bit. The museum is well worth going into as there isn't must to read and learn while walking the outdoor area. Bring good walking shoes as surfaces are uneven and bring lots of water if visiting during the warmer parts of the year. There is no shade, so dress appropriately or wear sunscreen! We enjoyed our visit and would definitely recommend it.

This castle was built during Antiquity. Despite enduring the Roman and Ottoman empires it has remained intact up to the present day. Rozafa Castle has witnessed so much over the course Albania’s history. Our visit was so fascinating just seeing its ancient Illyrian walls and the medieval ruins of the Balshaj, listening to stories of the Towers of the Bushatllinj. A must visit if you are in Shkodër

nteresting fo see the Landmark of Shkodra sticking out of top of the hill 130 meters above sea level. From the castle you have excellent 360 degree vie over the city and landscape. Originally an Illyrian forth, its remains are mostly of Venetian construction. The leaflet given at the box office but some sine boards scattered around the ruins
Life sized sculpture of Rozafa half buried in the wall can be seen in the castle museum where you can learn about the the story. Entrance 200 lek, unfortunately on our visit closed for unknown reason.
There is a free parking close to the entrance about 10 min from the box office. The entrance fee 400 lek / 4€.

The entrance ticket is 3.50 euros per person for Razafa Castle. There are great views from this historic site. When we were there, it was not crowded. Parking near the gate was free.
One unusual thing happened. My wife and I used the Razafa restroom at the top of the hill. As we walked across the courtyard grass after using the restroom, a man told us that we each owed 2 euros for using the Razafa restroom. The Razafa restrooms had no sign concerning a charge. I said that we paid to get into the Castle and use the facilities, and there were no signs indicating a fee for using the restroom. We refused to pay. The man insisted that we owed 4 euros. We left Razafa.

Warning! :
Watch out for holes! At the top my partner was taking a picture and accidentally backed into a hole (see photo). Thankfully a backpack was warn, the backpack allowed for him to not slip straight down, it allowed a few seconds for me to pull him out. Without the backpack...ugh! If someone falls in, your surely breaking at least one body part...if not more serious. Please mind where you/your children are walking.

Opens at 10 am and closes at 8 pm. The entrance fee is also 200 LEK. Hope this helps.

Could you please tell me where exactly in the fortress is the place where (according to the legend) the wife of one of the three brothers was immured?
I suppose it is directly next to the main entrance gate but I am not sure. There should be holes in the wall and from the hole where her breast was, there are traces of white liquid on the wall (supposedly milk).
Where exactly do I find it?
Thanks for the reply.
