Up in front of the monastery ruins there is an old man who charges €4 for parking in the small gravel parking lot. We just wanted to take a quick look over the mountain. It was too expensive for that (and for everything else). We turned around.

"The city's name, Saranda from the name of the Byzantine monastery of the Agioi Saranda (Greek: Άγιοι Σαράντα), meaning the "Forty Saints" and honoring the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste" (from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarand%C3%AB).
We hiked up to the hill, but it was difficult to find the place. We had a local paper map, it signs just the roads leading to the monastery, but not the others, and we strayed in the wrong direction a few times.
Finally we got it, it was worth the trip. There is beautiful view from the walls, like from Lekursi Castle, but this is a completely deserted and peaceful place.
We had not known, so we did not, but - according to sarandaweb - you can request permission from the Sarande town hall (Bashkia Saranda) to visit the crypt.
The ruins of the Monastery are visible from the seashore, if you know, that they are over there (from the direction of the city boulevard right from the three radio transmission tower).

It was hard to get taxi-they say you cant go.Well yes you can, you just need to walk last 200 meters. There is no information so prepare yourself in advance. You can clime and see yourself. I would suggest to go in the morning or early evening with something to drink. Its not a big area, half an hour is enough.

While little sadly remains of this important religious/historical site it is nonetheless worth a visit, if not for the nearby castle on this hill, but the views of Saranda and the bay. Built and then modified over a number of centuries, (the correct structure dates from 15th Century) it can trace its origins to the 4th Century with the Killing/martyrdom of 40 Christians during the persecution of the later Roman empire (and who were later canonised as Saints). The Basilica church of three naves, (which dates from 4th to 6th century) measures 40x24 and too was rebuilt in the 15th Century. Destroyed by earthquakes and war, the site is now in a somewhat dilapidated condition, mostly frequented by local kids and the odd archaeologist, but the site is locked at night and is Free to enter... worth a car ride, or if like... a long walk.

Go early in the morning, or later in the afternoon,
when the light is softer for the pictures...
Excellent panoramic view on Saranda & Corfu!
If you walk up on foot from the city center, some friendly neighbor will likely invite you for a cool drink ;)

We had a short stop over with our cruise ship in Sarande. Disembarking was exeptional with the small boats from the cruiseschip, so no gangway to use. Anyhow in this way it was a nice entrance into the city Sarande. Sarande has taken its name from an ancient monastery situated on the cliff of the "Forty Saints" . Beside an nice walk on the avenue near the coast line you can visit also the Stone City.

Hard to understand why is so abandoned. Same view like Lekuresi Castle but not so popular.Wonderful view at Saranda Bay.

Lovely place to grab the best views of Saranda on one side, Corfu and then Ksamil looking south. 200 Lek entrance.

This place has a great unexploited potential. No tourist guide, no aditional informations, nothing at all

This sight is overlook by most tourists but deserve more attention. Less that 5 min from central with a car this sight offers spectacular 360 views but of course there is practically no information. Research beforehand to best appreciate. 100Lek admission.

We will be visiting Saranda via HAL. (8:00-5:00 P.M.)
I understand they utilize the LEK (is about $1=121LEK about right?) Do they however accept the EURO? (understanding change will most likely be in LEK)

EURO is accepted everywhere. Sometimes they can give you your change in EURO or most commonly they will give it in lek. They told us that Euro coins have an exchange rate of 1-1 and they use for paper money the rate for 1euro=136 lek.
