Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Tanga Market was a fun one to browse. I tend to like food markets more then shopping streets as they are interesting and lively, especially here in Japan. I came here twice and both times it was busy with both buyers and sellers. There is a lot of fresh seafood and produce here, but there were several vendors selling snacks and other finger foods. I loved fried food here in Japan, so I couldn't pass up some of the fried chicken. There were also yakitori vendors that had some good options. Not the cleanest street or part of town, but I guess most markets are kind of like this. Everyone was friendly. As a tourist, I suggest coming here and browsing the market, also get a few small items to taste.

If you would like to experience a traditional Japanese market, Tanga ichiba is a right place to go. It is just like Nishiki market in Kyoto or Kuromon market in Osaka. It should be interesting for foreign tourists. Even for Japanese, it recalls a nostalgia for Showa Time. But you should go before the noon. As I went there afternoon, the most of shops were closed.

The stalls here are selling a lot of fresh seafood, vegetables and fruits. There was a small restaurant in the market, with cozy atmosphere and friendly owner! The menu wasn't having too many food choices but they are fresh and delicious! I was craving for Asari but they didn't have that in the menu. The chef then bought it somewhere from the market and customized one for me! And it was definitely one of the nicest Asari I have had! By the way, if you are the first timer for market in Japan, I would recommend Karato market! You will be surprised with the visit! It is reachable from Mojiko station, few more stations after Kokura.

As I was exploring Kitakyushu early morning, I noticed a lot of signs pointing to Tanga market. Since I was just wandering around, I decided to follow the signs and found myself at a pretty interesting market.
The walk from my hotel (Daiwa) was about 10 to 15 minutes. On a beautiful March morning, the walk was very enjoyable. Many of the stores in the main area was not open yet so it provided a less busy view of the main eating and shopping area of Kitakyushu.
Tanga market was very quiet at around 9 am on a Tuesday morning. There were quite a few stores open but many of them were closed. It is a smaller market and there is a smell of a wet market to it. That's not surprising given that there were quite a few stores selling fresh fish and meats. There were also a few stores selling some form of fermented fish.
When I told my Japanese co-workers that I went to Tanga market, they were surprised. They felt it was small, dirty, and smelly. I actually thought that they were being very picky. I have been to worse markets in other countries. Tanga market is a lot cleaner and less wet than many markets I have been to. In fact, I want to say that it is cleaner than the fish market I went to in Otaru on Hokkaido island.
Overall, it is like another market in Japan. If you are in Kitakyushu and looking for some fresh fruits, fish, or a few other food items, I think Tanga market is a good choice.

Fresh fish, vegetables, and fruits. So cheap. Quite a few of restaurants serve oden and sashimi. However, quite smelly.

When we arrived at 12:00 noon, most of the shop inside was closed. It was an old market inside shopping street.

I like this market a lot. The food there is cheap and local.
And, the cheese buns there are must-try, super tasty, and only 180 jpy per one!

Well if you have time and interest, you can choose to come here to get more understanding of the daily lives of the kicks people. Or you can come here for lunch. The market is open gradually after 9:00 am .
Opposite to the markets is the commercial streets of kokura. The commercial streets has plenty of restaurants, bars and shops.

If I had reviewed this when I first was there it would have gotten a far better grade. However after this I went to see several more markets and we'll they are all basically the same. But it is still lots of fun to see what normal japanese ppl buy and eat on the regular.
