This place is perfect to find food or souvenirs after a visit to the sacred shrine. You must be hungry after walking around the outer and inner shrine, and here you can find regional specialties that you won't find elsewhere.

In the Edo era, more than two million people a year visited Ise-jinguu, and the Monzenmachi (township in front of the shrine gates) of Oharai-machi prospered as the pilgrims traveled through the town to reach Ise Jinguu. But by the end of the 1970s the...More

Sure it's a tourist trap, but if it's all you have time for take advantage of the opportunity to see many interesting things. The prices are high and the quality is often not as high as you can find when you have more time to...More

I was looking forward to this shopping street, but ended up quite disappointed. Apart from the pearl shops (the famous local craft) and a few unique food places, almost everything else was the standard tourist fare that you can find in Kyoto. The architecture was...More

We had high hopes for Oharai-machi and Okage-yokocho, but we were a bit disappointed with the "old town" architecture. It was not as exciting as we had read about. There were plenty of snack shacks and souvenir shops, the food part was by far better....More

Oharai-Machi is a pedestrian street near Ise Naigu. On the both sides of the street you can find many souvenir shops, restaurants, cafes and so on. The visitors to the shrine certainly come to this street. As I went there, it was the new year's...More

So many good quality shops in such a small area. My favorites are Henba-mochi (mochi sweets), Kutsurogi-ya (incense), Toraya (Uiro sweets), Akahuku honten (famous Akahuku-mochi), which also sells limited-edition sweets only on the first day of each month -- people make a long line to...More
