Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This Temple dates back to the 12th century. A short bus ride from the JR line this area is literally a thousand years away. Off the tourist path to say the least. A block from the bus stop and up a residential street. If you didn't know it was here you'd never find it. One hundred yen admission. Kids are free. The temple is marvelous but the real attraction is the calm surrounding it. We came here for the tea house, a true Japanese cultural art. Two choices. One is 600 yen which is fine. Otherwise a thousand yen gets you a fancier sweet. Kimono dressed servers. Peace surrounds the open sided pavilion. Calm is everywhere. If this doesn't lower your blood pressure you have a serious problem. Leaving the tea house, wander up the marked path. Low and behold, a beautiful western style house belonging to the former Governor. Then you look closer and it's actually a first rate restaurant. It may be a bit pricey if you're on a budget, but if you can splurge a little, please to enjoy! An afternoon tea is 2800 yen and includes one tea plus a nice selection of sweets and treats. It refreshed 4 adults and a hungry 4 year old. There are other entrees available plus liquor if you are so inclined. Be sure to go outside and check the beautiful gardens surrounding the home. You can eat outside if the weather allows. True Japanese history, culture and history all in one package. Recommended to us by a Japanese friend, this visit will always be regarded as one of out highlights on this, our third visit to this country.

This Buddhist temple is about the same length walk from the bus stop as Hokoku-ji, and if you have extra time in your day it's a lovely picturesque stop on a tour of the temples of Kamakura. It's main building is a good size, and its gardens are pristinely manicured. A small tea house is attached to the grounds, but I'm unsure of its hours as it seems to be almost always closed.

If you have limited time, I recommend some of the other temples in the area, but there are some wonderful photo opportunities here, and it has fewer visitors than the nearby "bamboo temple" so it's much quieter if you're looking for a calm place to pray or simply take in the zen space.

A quiet and peaceful Zen temple near Hokokuji with beautiful gardens. There's a restaurant on top of the hill.

My friend and I had been to Tokyo recently and we decided to spend a day in Kamakura and to do the Enoshima Bay drive tour. This was set up fo us be Sunrise Tours JTB by Hermione who was arrogant but efficient. We met the group at the Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo in Shinjuku and boarded a bus and were taken to the Hamamatsucho Bus Terminal where we boarded another bus which took us to Kamakura. Our first stop was the Jomyo-ji Temple and we took part in a green tea experience while we were there. We then walked to the Hokoku-ji Temple and were there for about 30 minutes. Then off to the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu and we then boarded a bus to the Kotoku-in temple to view the Great Buddha. It took time to get from place to place, sometimes walking, other times taking a bus ride. We then went to a hotel for a Japanese style lunch and were given ample time to eat. We met several interesting people while there, other Americans and Europeans. After lunch, we headed to Enoshima Island and spent about 2 hours there. We took the Escar up to Enoshima Island and then took the stairs down. Each garden was tranquil and it was good that Hermione had set us up with this since we were able to do all of this in one day. It was a long day but well spent.

This temple may not have such an immaculate garden like the nearby, and easier to reach Hokokuji, but it was definitely worth to me the little extra effort up the hill from the bus stop. There’s an attractive garden as one enters the temple area, but going beyond the temple, by climbing either the path through more garden or the umpteen steps in the (large) cemetery, on can turn and admire a fantastic view over the heavily wooded valley. It wasn't crowded, so was very tranquil, as was taking tea in the tearoom viewing its very small, but lovely gravel & greenery garden. I also visited, on this day, Holokuji and Zuisenji, but Jomyoji was by far and away my pick

If you have time after visiting the bamboo garden at Hokokuji temple, then drop by. But, don`t expect too much here. There is a cafe and a Japanese tea house, if you would like to rest a bit. For more, refer to "hiddenjapanguide".

This place is small but it is serene with zen like tranquility in the Japanese garden. We were treated to a tea ceremony and sampled the green tea.

This is one of the many nice temples in Kamakura. I had hoped to drink tea in the garden, but couldn't find a way in. Perhaps it was closed. I did see the small rock garden, which is also very nice. There is a large restaurant at the top of the hill, and I was not sure if this is part of the temple or something separate. You can combine a visit here with a visit to Sugimotodera and Hokokuji.

Compare to Hokokuji which is around the corner, we thought this temple's entrance fee of 100 yen was so limited to see. In the leaflet given at the entrance states, there are Japanese rock garden and English garden, but it is not mentioned they are annexed to the cafes where we must order something to see the view. We did not know; we simply went inside of the cafe to take some photos and were told to order something. So, it ended to pay more to appreciate those beautiful gardens.

This is a lovely little temple, located in Kamakura.
While the temple is anything but impressive, being rather far from the road makes it possible for it to be tranquil.
But there are far superior temples to see in Kamakura, so only visit it in case you've seen the better ones first.
