Quite a way away from the city. Took us 2 hours from Ginza. Not easy to get to. However, once you’re there, it is all worth the travel. Honestly, the place speaks for itself.
The entrance - paid for. From there, views are just beautiful. The grounds are kept clean, toilets were all clean and accessible. The gardens and pond areas were lovely and well looked after.
The Buddha is just divine. The experience inside is beautiful.
Highly recommend this place. Definitely visit one of the tallest Buddhas in the world!

Probably one of the best, or the best attractions around Tokyo!!!

Transportation: train + train + bus
Total time: less than 2 hrs.
Total Price: 1720Y

Getting there:
We were staying next to Shinjuku Station, very crowded and fast pace station. Follow:
1. Look for the JR ticket office and purchase Shinjuku to Ushiku station, 1100Y.
2. Head to platform 15 and take JR Yamanote LIne towards For Ikebukuro
3. Get off at Nippori station (21 mins, 10 stops).
4. Follow signs for Joban LIne, platform 4. Google maps says:
JR Joban Line towards Tsuchiura (55 mins, 12 stops)
However, at Nippori station is a bit trickier than that, since most of the information is for trains that are closer to Tokyo area, and Ushiku station is far far away...
Anyways, It seems that there are 3 trains: local route, rapid and ultra rapid; however, we just took the first one that came and it was the rapid route from Nippori to Toride (about 7 stops). At Toride we had to change trains to go all the way to Ushiku (train towards Tsuchiura)...very easy, just up and down the stairs to the platform across. This train will take about 25 minutes towards Ushiku, about 5 stops or so...
5. Catch a bus that will take you directly to the Buddha of Ushiku. As soon as you cross the ticket counter, turn left and go downstairs towards the bus stops, look for bus stop #1, 620Y
6. Bus schedule (may change): 9:55, 11:35, 12:55, 13:50, 15:20.
The bus takes about 25 minutes and it will stop right at the entrance of the park. The return buses were also limited. At the counter you can ask for the return bus schedule.
7. 500Y general entrance or 800Y with access to the museum inside the buddha, totally worth it.

Go there if you have the chance.

The statue is far bigger than it seems in photos and videos and is worth the visit from Tokyo. Beautiful park surrounding the daibutsu & interesting to see the construction history of it inside. There are viewing points inside the buddha from which you can see a nice view at about 120 m.

Few things to note though - it will take up the most of your day as bus connections from the station are pretty bad. -

Weekdays buses are 9.55 // 11.35 // 12.55 // 13.50 & 15.20 to the daibutsu
and
return buses are 10.35 // 1300 /. 1345 // 1435 // 1610.

The bus is 580 yen to the daibutsu, and slghtly more (i think 630) back to the station. Entry to the park is 800 yen, which includes the inside of the statue.

A visit is worthwhile, but maybe only on your second or third visit to Tokyo (unless you have a car), as it is quite far from anything and involves a lot of waiting around for a day trip.

I had never heard of this Buddha before and was in fact searching for another large sized Buddha when I read that this structure is the highest Buddha in the world. Luckily I live in Yokohama and was able to drive the 2 hour journey to Ushiku rather than rely on public transport. I was somewhat surprised by the location of this attraction- when you get off the highway you drive through some countryside until all of a sudden the huge Buddha appears in the distance. Finding the carpark entrance was a little challenging as our google maps let us down but we eventually worked out we had to drive through the cemetery and veer left until we arrived at the carpark.

The Buddha itself is huge and very impressive! It is almost 3 times as high as the Statue of Liberty if you include its base and lotus pedestal. To approach the Buddha, once having purchased an entrance ticket which is around Y800 to enter the grounds and go inside and ascend the Buddha, you walk through a garden which i imagine looks very impressive in Spring. I saw photos of the garden in different seasons- in winter, it is quite bare. There are cherry blossom trees which would make for a stunning backdrop in Sakura time. There is also a circular flower garden which must looking stunning when in bloom. According to the brochure the cosmos bloom in Set/Oct, Califronian Poppy in May, and peony and Hydrangea in May/June.

You enter the actual Buddha structure from around the back. Be prepared to remove your shoes and place them in a plastic bag and carry then with you. Upon entering, a guide who does not speak English will take you into an elevator which opens up into the Room of Light. This room contains images and statues of Buddhas illuminated with lovely light. Walk through this and you arrive in circular curved area that has various colored changing lights and you feel as if you have just entered the Mothership!!! Very spacecraft feel indeed! Walk around to the right and then ascend some stairs. This takes you to an area with photos showing the construction of the Buddha and gives a sense of scale. A guide will appear and take you in the elevator to the 4th floor which is as high as you can go. There are 4 series of slitted windows facing east, west, north and south which you can look through but to be honest the views are the most disappointing part of this attraction. The location is nothing extraordinarily and the slitted windows are long and and narrow and do not allow good panoramic photos.

Moving downstairs, you enter a very impressive floor called The World of the Lotus Sanctuary which contains around 3300 golden statues of Buddhas.

Ticket price is 800 yen for adults and 400 yen for children from April to November entitling you to see the gardens and enter the Buddha. From Dec- March the ticket price is 700 yen for adults. The Buddha is open 365 days. If you need to use public transport, It is a 20-30 minute bus ride from Ushiku station on the Joban Line or a 15 minute taxi ride.

Would definitely recommend a trip to see this amazing Buddha and combine it with another attraction in the area or a tour around Narita city (if you have a car).

Food and souvenir stalls are at the entrance to the Buddha and there is also a cafe/restaurant on site.

When you go to Japan, you absolutely have to see this epic Buddha Statue! I recommend going inside the statue and go up to the top by elevator, even though it costs more to do so. Amazing! This is Japanese History!!

I’ve been wanting to see this Buddha statue for the past two years and finally got there yesterday. Rented a car service with 4 others vs taking the train as we didn’t think we’d make it before closing with limited time.
As you’re driving you can see the statue in the distance and can’t believe how big is. Upon arriving 800 yen gets you inside to ride the elevator to the museum inside. Well worth it as you can see how it was built and relate to the actual size compared to other statues.
The elevator takes you to the heart of the statue where you can look outside at the beautiful surroundings. We spent about 45 min inside and then the elevator takes you to a lower observation deck where you can stand right below it and look up with amazement.
Would highly recommend, wouldn’t even think twice about visiting here. No credit cards so make sure you have yen for everything, even inside to purchase gifts.

I went there by motorcycle and could see the thing from a distance. Not having researching it like you're doing, I was surprised;
price is 800Y to enter with access to the lift to go to the top, a lot of parking space. Take off your shoes, take the lift and go at shoulder level (85m) to see a view of tokyo: amazing photos of the city with the skytree in the distance. Go up there at sunset just before closing time.

Worth the time to get there, my girlfriend and I drove from Yokosuka. This statue is the biggest Buddha in Japan. If you take the time to walk along the grounds, they have a botanical garden, several ponds, and a petting zoo.
The official website is in Japanese, but I did find this if you read English.
