牛久市のランドマークとなっている牛久大仏。東本願寺によって建造されましたが、この大仏がある場所は寺ではなく霊園で、さらに大仏自体が1999年に完成した新しいものであり、仏教の歴史的建造物や文化財はありません。霊園を基軸とした公園もしくは観光地という位置づけのスポットです。そのため園内は庭園やリス等の小動物の動物園も併設されており、子供から老人まで、幅広い層が楽しむ憩いの場となっています。 牛久大仏は胎内に入ることができます。エレベーターで展望台まで上がることができますが、混雑必至な上に、展望台からの眺めも牛久市の田園風景が広がる程度で、一見の価値という程でもありません。むしろ、胎内の薄暗い空間内での写経だったり、庭園に広がる花々や小動物に触れ合うことをお勧めします。 The Buddha statue "Ushiku Daibutsu" is the landmark of Ushiku City.
