Close to Alexandria, situated above the Potomac with a great view - well worth dropping in. We went because the Horticultural Society was having a plant sale, very glad we did. What a great history: once one of George Washington's estates, private home for decades...More

One of George Washington's five farms, it was originally his brother Laurence's. The house itself is available for parties (large tented area) outside or in. View of the Potomac is lovely and the grounds reflect native species but not so manicured as to be fussy.

I discovered River Farm, home of the American Horticultural Society, when I visited it as a possible wedding venue for my daughter. A short drive along the Potomac River on the GW Parkway (minutes out of Old Town Alexandria), you enter through a low fence...More

No crowds, few people, colonial architecture, quick strolls thru botanical grounds, nice little children's garden, a little exposed to sun on those hot and humid days. Not heavy on historical info, but a nice quick stop on the banks of the Potomac enroute to Mt...More

Happy you enjoyed your visit here! A nice tie-in with Mount Vernon, since George Washington once owned River Farm (one of his five local farms). The foundations of our Estate House are colonial era, but the buildings you see are from the early 20th century....More

River Farm is a lovely place to visit. Their outdoor gardens are absolutely lovely. I recommend taking a picnic with you as there are not any eateries there. Only downside is that they have limited hours so check the website before you visit.More
