This museum is housed in the basement of a building owned by the Northern Virginia Urban League and it has limited hours. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re interested in the role that Alexandria played in domestic slave trade. The exhibits are very well-presented...More

This is a small museum with a huge message. It's worth the effort to find this little gem, off the beaten path. The museum offers first-hand accounts of the slave market that was conducted in this building. This is done through a video, interactive slide...More

Even though this museum has some non-orthodox schedule, I have managed to see it. The place is very small, but it is precious. You get to look at the REAL quarters where the slaves were held and sold. The walls and window grids are original....More

It is shocking and sobering to find out about the slave trace, right here in Alexandria. Good displays, and a good video.

This obscure building houses a sad devastating history that should be mandatory for all. As I was leaving one of the volunteers asked my reaction. I was so emotional I could not speak.

This is a fine alternative or addition to visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The NMAAHC is a very tough ticket right now so if you're near Alexandria, stop by the Freedom House. It's a small and intimate look into the...More

The absolute horror and human injustice of slavery is well presented in this small museum. In order to really get a sense of how Old Town was built (slave labor and money from the slave trade), every visitor should come here while visiting the other...More

Although small, there is a lot packed in and it is well designed with interactive exhibits, videos, etc. Never boring.

We enjoyed our visit to this museum which originally was the largest slave trade business here in Alexandria. It was the business highlighted in the movie 12 Years a Slave.

The Museum is open dailey 10:00 am - 3:00 p.m. or by appointement. Call 703-836-2858 and speak with Ms. Vickey King. The tour is self-guided and the basement is actually where slaves were held. An amazing experience for the entire family.
