- Ace5150Nuneaton, United Kingdom112 contributionsA beautiful well maintained historical cemeteryThe very famous Texas State Cemetery where only the VERY elite Texans get to be buried. Lots of iconic gravestones for admirers of Texan culture. I stumbled across Susan, a guide of sorts, who was incredibly helpful showing me some beautiful headstones and giving a brief history of each one. The Confederacy graves were very interesting, as were some of the "names" from modern Texas. I respectfully sought permission (as you should do) before taking photographs of certain graves, and was assured it was perfectly acceptable, but I still think it doesn't hurt to show some respect nevertheless. By far the unusual was Eugene Cernan who was the last man on the moon. His grave is at the cemetery highest point, so he was "nearer to the moon" Monuments commemorating 9/11 along with modern conflicts involving the USA were also on view, all immaculately displayed and maintained. Senators, Governors, Media Stars, Sports Stars and Texan household names were all here, a befitting final resting place.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 9 October 2023

I was so taken aback by what a great experience I had here. This is one of the best cemeteries I have ever experienced. Every single grave was some outstanding person in Texas history. I happened upon a guide and had a tour. Everything was free. Parking is free. Beautiful grounds. Well kept. Excellent experience. I highly recommendVisited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 9 June 2024

The Texas State Cemetery is the burial place of many prominent Texans. Only a few of them, however, such as “American Sniper” Chris Kyle, are nationally famous. It’s mostly former Texas governors, judges, and legislators I’d never heard of, and few of the headstones themselves are really noteworthy. As it is a mile outside of downtown, I’d skip it absent special interest. If you go stop at the visitors’ center for a map so you can find the prominent graves. It’s a small cemetery only about three blocks long and two blocks wide and you can visit it thoroughly in a half hour.

This is a beautiful cemetery for notable Texas icons. Tom Landry & Chris Kyle just to name a couple. There are many headstones for Texans that have not even passed away yet but they've got their spot reserved!

During the pandemic and most attractions closed, the cemetery gates were open. We enjoyed a lovely walk through the grass and enjoyed seeing all the Texas notables. Large shade trees kept the sun at bay. This is such a treasure.

Final resting place of many key people in Texas history from Civil War to present. Grounds are well maintained. Easy to walk through. The area designed as a garden. Peaceful place to clear the mind. Well worth the visit.

This beautiful old cemetery is a must see for any Texan. Great names in our history such as Stephen F. Austin, Chris Kyle, Bob Bullock (God Bless Texas), James Street and Darryl Royal (Hook 'Em Horns), John Connally, Susanna Dickinson (Alamo survivor), you get the picture. Quiet, well maintained, just a beautiful place to visit amidst the hectic that is Austin. Highly recommended and it is free.

I cannot believe I've been a Texan all my life and haven't been there until now. This place is amazing. It's a wonderful and peaceful cemetery which is a resting place for notable Texans from the 1800s right up to present day. You will be shocked and humbled to see the graves of governors, pioneers, soldiers, artists and athletes. So many famous names, so little time. Make the time to visit this place! I left feeling inspired to dig deeper into Texas history.

I was in Texas for a wedding and was asked by a fellow traveler to visit Chris Kyle's grave. I am 62 and my friend in her early 30's. Once we paid our respects to Chris Kyle's grave, we walked around this peaceful, beautiful cemetery. Then I began to see history in front of me. There are several memorials to historical events here, but there were graves of famous Texans who have a place in American history. As we walked past graves of such notables as Tom Landry, John Connolly, and Charlie Wilson my friend had no idea who they were. I had the pleasure of "teaching" a history lesson. What a pleasant experience.

The Texas State Cemetery is the final resting place for many great Texans - including Cowboys coach Tom Landry, Chris Kyle from "American Sniper", former governor John Connolly and many, many more. The cemetery has a great website which helps you navigate the grounds. The only "knock" - and why I didn't give it four starts - is that parking is limited and can be pretty tricky. But other than that, it was a great experience! Glad I stopped by!

Yes parking is available inside the cemetery but it gets crowded sometimes. Best to Park outside and walk in.
Get to see more that way. Well worth the walk.
