I teach at Lansdowne Friends School in Philly, and we went to Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train as part of our overnight trip. The kids loved it. There was a lot to learn, and the guides didn't hold back on the realities of mining life. I'd recommend to anyone looking to teach students about PA history and Coal... More

A complete day of fun and learning can be found here, be it the tunnel, the train ride along the side of the mt., the near by Anthracite Museum or just taking the kids into the park-playground area. Picnic sections are available. Check with the tunnel office for specifications on times and costs for each. Museum is locate at Ashland... More

I chaperoned my son's field trip. He really enjoyed the tour, especially the guide in the mine. He thought he was very funny but educational.

Great spot for a family day trip in the heart of Pennsylvania coal country. Very informative tour of a one time working coal mine. Trips are taken deep into the mine by mine cars which were transformed to seat people. Once inside, a guided walking tour provides information about the coal mining industry of yesteryear. There is also a short... More

This tour was amazing. Riding old coal train into coal mine, seeing actual veins of coal. Our guide was very nice and informative. Lots of places for picnics, extremely kid friendly.

Finished our nearby covered bridge tour with in-laws early, so went over to Ashland for Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine Tour. It had been over 20 years since last there, and it hadn't changed. In other words still an excellent tour and we have been too many mine tours not only in the PA anthracite region but across the U.S. Prices... More

We went on both the cave tour and the steam train tour, and both were very interesting! The tour guides and tours were different, and told about different aspects of coal mining. The train guide was very welcome to questions, but both were knowledgeable! What a dangerous and hard life coal miners had/have! Just be aware that the coal mine... More

Coming from a family that were coal miners, an uncle, grandfather and father, it was an awesome experience to be able to go into the coal mine and experience some of what my family must have experienced for many years. It made all the stories I have heard over the years more surreal!

Really interesting to know how those coal miners work in dark and cold place. My kids enjoyed riding on both steam train and coal train. Be sure to bring jackets or sweatshirt on coal tour. It's really cold! Oh by the way, if ya have an hearing loss...they have an script of tour paper available! They also have a nice... More

Too rushed. Groups too large. Could have been very interesting. When you stop to take pictures, you don't hear about the next stop. Anyone in the back of the group couldn't hear the guide. If you have the time and means visit Lackawanna or No. 9. Way more information given, smaller groups, more interesting and museums are free to wander... More
