There aren't too many swimming options in the Athens area; if the pool is closed and you don't want to go out to Lake Snowden, Strouds Run will do the bill. It's not much, but there are halfway decent walking trails nearby.
The beach is the place to be when the kids wants a sandbox. We have had picnics and barbeques here in the summer. When it gets really cold in the winter, head out to the lake and walk on its frozen water.
