A relatively small market mostly selling fresh produce (veggies, betel leaves and nuts, bananas, papayas, coconuts) and there are a few stalls with candies, coconut oil and other local specialities. It is - like Male in general - not relly visited by tourists (I was there on a Sunday at noon). Sellers were either indifferent or friendly but never pushy, after asking they agreed to take photos with them. Most of them could speak more or less English. 2 small bananas: 10 rufiyaa; a cup of coffee: 15 rufiyaa; small bag of sea almonds: 75 rufiyaa; coconut-honey candy: 25 rufiyaa.

We visited this market along the sea front. I was fascinated by the colourful offering within the market, fruits and vegetables are plentiful here. Many locals frequent the market and the place is busting with activities. The colours are simply awesome for pictures, symbolic of the colourful Male city has to offer.

Amazing, lots of fresh and exotic local fruits. I really liked it, because this how you can experience the local life, if you go to be between locals. They were also nice and gave me some to taste some stuff, not only fruits but also a delicious dessert which was wrapped in banana leaves. It was tasting like chocolate, but it also contained some haselnuts probably, and it was made from cocoa. I bought some of those.

This is the place very popular for dried fish and Maldive fish. Prices are very reasonable and always lower than the prices I. Your home country. Sellers are very friendly. Most of them are Bangladeshis. But they speak sinhala language pretty well.

Nothing really interesting to see. Crazy prices and the city is definetely not tourist friendly. If you want to jump and see around don't lose time and spend more time on the beach instead! We regretted not spending extra hours on the beach. Moreover, a big issue all over Maldives, but especially in Male is the trash, plastic (everywhere in the ocean) in particular!!!

I love markets - the narrow passageways, the colors, the tropical fruits, meeting locals. This market is fairly small but still fascinating. I would guess that most of the food is imported as very little is grown in the Maldives. You will see coconuts, bananas, mangoes, papayas, pineapples and more. And some unusual fruits too.

While many visits the Maldives for it's finest beaches, the local market is a must. Many resorts and hotels have their Maldivian Night theme during events nights however mixed with modern styles. The local market will open your eyes further. You will see how a real local dress up, how they see you as a normal and local like person like them. Some are unfortunately unable to speak English but you can surely understand through their body language. Very genuine friendliness! They have variety of fresh island fruits which some are common but tastes differently. Check their mangoes too, very tiny ones but real sweet and pulpy! Of course, all kinds of fresh and live fishes to see, and their unique island chips comes in different shapes and styles and taste. Go see yourself!!

The local market is in a series of small buildings across the road from the fish market.
There are 5-6 separate entrances along the side of the building, because each entrance only takes you into 1 row of stalls on either side of the path through the building. It is a pity the whole building has not been better developed to allow visitors, and shoppers easier access to the various sections.

There was a good variety of local food on display, and I'm guessing we could have tasted some samples had we wanted to.
It is worth a visit just to see what is for sale locally.

Located on the pier between the city-front jetties and the North Harbor, the Local Market is basically the ‘grocery store’ for the locals. Consisting of stalls in a darkish shed, the market is the source of fresh fruits, vegetables and other daily requirements of the kitchen. There is little there for the traveling visitor, but some of the local fruits and vegetables are interesting, especially the hot chilies. One may also try some of the local snacks, usually prepared from rice puffs, peanuts and sesame seeds. Water from green-coconut is a refreshing drink. There are further shops across the street with lots of fruits and vegetables, especially mangoes.
