Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The largest mosque in male and built with donations from many Islamic countries. The surrounding area is also very clean and neat and you may spend some time here. It is allowed to enter the premises for everyone including ladies if you are not wearing revealing clothes. This is my first experience inside a mosque as it is not allowed to enter them in most of other countries. Good place to blend in with local culture and get to know a thing or two about them.

As part of our tour of Male. We came to this mosque which is also the Islamic Centre. The golden dome dominates it.
This is a good contrast to the nearby Hukuru Miskiiy Mosque which has the external wall made of coral and is somethat older.

Grand Friday Mosque dominated the center of Male. Once landed at the jetty, the drop-off point by the tender from the cruise ship, the dome of the mosque is very prominent. Being non-Moslem, we were not allow to enter into the mosque. However simply photo taking from the outside was already very impressive. The entrance to the mosque as well as the garden next to it created a must-visit area for all visitors. Take your time to visit the area in detail even unable to enter the interior of the Grand Friday Mosque.

Funded by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Malaysia and Brunei, Grand Friday Mosque (opened 1984) is the republic's largest that can accommodate 5000+ worshippers, its golden dome and slender minaret among Male's most recognisable landmarks. Outside prayer times, an official guide usually hanging out at the entrance can show you around if respectfully dressed (long trousers required for men). The mosque itself is strikingly plain, lacking any architectural details, but at least the guide is willing to take photos for you and never asks for a tip.

Walking distance from the main jetty of Male and few steps away from the Fish Market. Nothing much to see other than the grand mosque. As its a mosque, visitors are expected to wear proper clothing.

We went and looked around on a weekday, and it was interesting.
But sit outside on a Friday and it is an amazing experience. The stream of men (and their boys) all walking from across the island to the Mosque is something very special to experience. The crowd continues to grow, the streets fill with prayer mats - well worth the experience. (I as at the round about just down from Seagull - so wasn't in the way but could see the arrivals).
For a religious country with 100% Muslim population - you see it on Friday.

I was surprised by the size and beauty inside the mosque. Non muslims can enter into the mosque but only muslims can enter the prayer hall. For those who are not appropriately dressed there is a supply of sarongs outside at no charge but most people will tip the provider.

Hi there. Is there any chance to take the ferry to Gulhi from Male on a Friday? Thanks.
Written 11 February 2018
Is ferry available from
Int airport to male on Friday or friday is a holiday in maldives
Written 14 July 2017
Yes Friday is a Government and Public holiday in Maldives ,including Banks and other big companies ,but it is not a holiday for small shops and ferry service to the Airport and Mainland Male'.
Only that during the afternoon prayer time as people will be in the Mosque for the Friday prayers hence the ferry frequency will be less and you may have to wait ,else it is available daily.
You can either avail the common airport service for people going to catch the flight or returning to Maldives from abroad or take a private ferry for yourself but you pay more for a private ferry.
Hope it is clear.
Best of Luck
