- Olivia0716Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia21 contributionsUnderwhelmed by building / pushy tour guideThis was an underwhelming experience and not a positive one either. Everyone greeted us very cordially and we’re given head-coverings upon arrival. I has the expectation that this would be a more cultural experience, learning about the history of the mosque, the Islam faith, and the architecture of the building. Boy, I was in for a treat. The tour guide that gave us the whole run down was very nice, friendly and informative, but it got to the point where he almost got TOO pushy with his way of explaining Islam to my friends and I, to the point where we felt really uncomfortable, not to mention he was just openly trashing and criticizing other faiths, which is not ok regardless of whether your practice any other religions. I respected him for exercising his faith and being passionate about it, but don’t shove it down my throat and definitely don’t try to convince me that it’s your way or the highway and everyone else is wrong. Aside from that, I thought the building in itself is nice, but nothing extraordinary that blew my mind. I could say you Can skip this and make room for other activities on your list.Visited January 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 January 2023
- Erick TsengSan Francisco, California533 contributionsDefinitely worth a visit!A stunning piece of architecture, the national mosque in Kuala Lumpur was one of our trip highlights. Make sure you check opening times before going. You also need to be dressed appropriately. Don't worry if you're not though, as they will provide you with complimentary robes if you need to cover up. The mosque is peaceful and serene inside, a welcome respite from a day of city sightseeing. The prayer hall is massive and very much worth a look. I would definitely recommend including this destination as you explore the sights of Kuala Lumpur.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 April 2023
- Alex HPort St. Mary, United Kingdom1,313 contributionsA great visit to a place of worshipHighly recommend visiting the national mosque as it is free and makes for some lovely pictures. Great also to experience other cultures’ religions. Of course it is necessary to abide by the dress code (males and females) and beware of the opening times. Overall, a must do if touring Kuala Lumpur.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 May 2023
- CAMLondon, United Kingdom391 contributionsA good adjunct to the Islamic Arts Museum if you want to learn about Islam in MalaysiaAs Christians (non-Muslims) we enjoyed our visit to the National Mosque in KL. The prayer space is huge & the design & architecture of the building lends itself to a contemplative & peaceful space. Most people were given a gown to ensure they were dressed modestly and that women’s heads were covered. A good insight into the religious diversity of KL.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 August 2023
- wireless_in_CAUnited States4,897 contributionsBig Beautiful MosqueWe stopped by dring the visiting hours for non-Muslims. If you are modestly dressed with pants and shirt then one was ok to enter but wearing shorts, sleeveless tops required a mosque provided purple robe to cover up. Once inside we could wander throughout except where blocked off for Muslims only. The main attractions were the pool in front of the minaret, gardens, small museum and the large prayer hall. In the prayer hall we were met by a volunteer who gave us a little history about the mosque as well as Islam. Very insightful and worth a visit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 October 2023

As a mosque, it's great, it can be considered as a "all in one" mosque since they have more than what normal mosque would have. They even have classrooms and special rooms for lectures and seminar-like events. They have multiple areas for ablution some of them are MASSIVE. A big plus for taking care of stray cats and kittens. They do have an area that could be use for taking pictures for special occasions such as weddings but things could look much better if the places aren't as moldy. However, those who are in a wheelchair have no method to get to the main praying area.
As a tourist attraction, it's between "good" and "great" for me. I was quite surprised to find multiple al-Qurans with translations in different languages because it was my first time seeing them in person. They do have a schedule for when Non-Muslims are allowed to enter the mosque for tours but they are quite small and easy to overlook which resulted in some tourists were told off by the staffs and guards. They even have a special place in the main praying space just for tourists to come in and take some pics of the place. They do provide robes for tourist who aren't as covered as they should be to enter a mosque.

It's a unique building that can represent the religion of Muslim in Malaysia.
The building is nice, modern and a good place for prayer.
It was a fantastic trip to the National Mosque as it was the first time I ever visited a mosque.

This might be a perfectly fine place for religious visits, but, as a tourist attraction, it is quite lackluster. You can take a quick walk around and see the prayer hall, but I have seen mosques that are far more beautiful than this elsewhere in the world. I didn't visit any other mosques in KL, but I'd be willing to bet there are more interesting ones. As a tourist, I'd advise skipping this attraction. It just isn't that interesting or visually appealing.

This is one of the largest mosques in the Malaysian capital. Despite of its name, the National Mosque is not that impressive architecturally or aesthetically. More interested visitors may want to get in outside prayer time.

are we allowed to use tripods to take photos inside the mosque?

Usually this shouldn't be a problem as long as using a tripod is not during prayer times (indicated by the call to prayers) and you observe the dress code in the Mosque proper.
