Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It is one of Chinese temples in Nagasaki. As it was not damaged by the atomic bomb explosion in 1945, many valuable constructions are still preserved. Among them, the main gate is a must see. It is free to visit this temple, but there is almost no tourist. If you like a quiet place, Shofukuji is a good choice.

The ancient temple is so precious that almost all areas are not refurbished. The tranquil atmosphere makes us feel calm and peaceful. The untouched structure withstands the tests of time and weather. This ancient temple is not big but definitely worth a visit.

Shofukuji is a wonderful temple, all hoary and ancient and moss covered – and untouristed and free. We climb up through an ancient gate, arrive at a curious edifice that serves as a second gate and a temple as well because of a shine in the center with Maitreya Buddha on the front side and the patron deity protecting the temple on the back, evidently unique in this double-function. The grounds and gardens of the temple and indeed the buildings themselves are not well attended, and it is unfortunate because we find the place utterly charming.

This is one of several temples stretched along the hillside and the loveliest and quietest. From the road there are several staircases to climb but once through the entrance it's compact and lovely to look at. There is a small board explaining its history, there will probably be no one around and you can have the place to yourself.

NB the spelling we have is Sofukuji, but TA has it "Sh...".

Beautiful Temple. Except for your time contemplating the Buddhas it will not take long to stroll through the temple grounds. It is noted for its entrance gate but we found the Buddha statues more interesting.

Take the tram to the end of the line at Shokakuji-Shita then walk a couple of minutes.

Easy to reach by streetcar, this temple is must when visiting Nagasaki. There is small entrance fee, but it's definetly worth it. Take stroll around temple grounds and soak in the atmosphere.

Sofukuji Temple was worth a quick stop for its unique looking Ryugumon Gate. While the interior wasn’t anything special, because of its hillside location, you can get a pretty good view of the city from the temple.

Indeed, some people on this website have confused Sofukuji Temple and Shofukuji Temple. They are quite different.
When we visited Shofukuji Temple there was hardly anyone else there. Lovely and peaceful! We preferred this one to some of the more modern temples we visited while in Japan.
Shofukuji is only a few minutes walk from the Fukusaiji Temple, if you are in this area.

Some photos for this site are actually for Sofukuji. You've been warned folks.

Anyway, this temple is gorgeous, probably my favourite one in the city. Loved the architecture and climbing up behind the buildings to view the roof tops.

No entry fee.

This temple is not far from the Museum of History and Culture. Sofukuji however is near Shiambashi tram stop. Just google map search the different names.
