- 優大 大19 contributionsHealing of animalsIf you go to the zoo in Osaka, it's easy to go to Tennoji Zoo, and it's close to the station. There are many kinds of animals, and I think it's good to go to see animals with friends, lovers and family. On the way back, it's in Tennoji, so it's possible to go to various shops.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 10 October 2023

Lots of vendo machines; lunch at cafeteria was good - chicken teriyaki, steak, curry 👍🏼 It is under construction but looking forward to it’s overhaul. No elephant as of this time. Has polar bear, giraffe, rhino, 2 big hippos! I’m very happy.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 June 2024
- sch8Singapore, Singapore140 contributionsGood enough for a young toddlerWe had a young toddler in tow with us so the size of the zoo was appropriate. Entrance fee was pretty cheap. Also, they are in the process of refurbishment so a few attractions were shut. I was a bit disappointed that there were no elephants but there were still enough animals to see for the price paid (and the fact that the toddler was more interested in running around). If you're looking for a place to go with a really young active toddler, check out Tennoji Zoo.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 June 2024

Do not visit this zoo. I've been fortunate to travel and visit many zoos around the world and this is one of the saddest and largest abusers of animal welfare I've seen.
Many handmade signs made out of cardboard and markers.
The polar bear exhibit looks like it's original from early 1900s. All concrete, no dirt, nothing. The Bear was extremely thin for its age range and was showing clear signs of stress. Pacing and pushing off a wall to pace the same route all over again.
The monkeys, many from Africa or south america, were in small cages left outside and shivering. They don't keep the interior door open for them to enter to keep warm, etc. Many of them are by themselves when they are social pact animals. Terrible
A mountain goat had a massive enclosure and it's the only goat. An old ram. Another social pact animal all by itself. It's enclosure was three times the size of the bears.
Both Jaguars had small enclosures.
The hippos left outside, no indoor enclosure I could see.
This zoo should be permanently shut down and animals relocated where they can be given the proper care deserving of them.

If you are European or American, DO NOT GO. I left feeling quite depressed. Awful treatment of animals. Makes our zoos at home look like Eden. If you are Japanese, do not go but try to lobby for some change here.

I guess its interesting how only Asians give this place a good review because they have idea about animal rights in Asia.
Its a miserable place, tiny cages, very dirty. Most animals are pacing in circles.

This zoo is a disgrace! Avoid at all costs! I recently went to osaka and purchased an osaka unlimited pass which included entry into this animal torture chamber. The inclosures were unkept and filthy, the animals were stressed and not looked after and the whole feel of the place left me feeling ashamed that I walked through the door! After seeing the polar bear pace backwards and forwards on a cement block I ran straight to the nearest exit! You should be ashamed Tennoji Zoo!

Seeing foxes crying and pacing in their tiny cage, wolves howling in a cramped space, a seal splashing in what can be referred to as only a puddle. Elephants that have gone mad and stand in the same spot swishing the dirt with their trunks in the most depressing display. What brought me to tears was the polar bear with rocks painted white and dirty water to swim in. How can an indanged animal be kept in such filthy conditions? The whole zoo stank like feces and there wasn't a toy or friend for any animal to interact with. The monkeys sat on the ground clutching the bars to their prison. I honestly don't know how some animal rights group hasn't found out about this zoo. I will be looking into organizations to write to. The animals here deserve better. They've even got a kiwi bird stewing in its own filth. I don't grasp how you can get a license to own an indangered animal without having some sort of follow up. I left crying and struggling to find an unlocked exit as I passed more and more animals in heartbreaking conditions.

I have been travelling around japan for around about 2 weeks now and Osaka has by far been a wonderful place to spend a few days to roam and see the sights. however yesterday me and my partner walked past the Tennoji Zoo and for a cheap price of 500 yen we decided to go in. After this day i will never go in a zoo again. The animals were distressed, skinny and overall the experience was hard to handle. Not all animals were like this but after seeing the bears we had to leave immediately. I emphasise that i am not an expert on wildlife and an animal enthusiast but it doesn't take an expert to see that these animals needed more.

It was a casual day and I decided to pay a visit to a zoo nearby. The animals were not healthy just by looking at them. They were not fed well, crying for help and stressed as hell; especially the polar bear. It was a total disturbing journey, please do not go...

I would never go back here even if it was free. The animals pace around and DONT look happy. Osaka has been a great experience for me but this place is rotten. This zoo should be closed....its not right of any animal to be put in there.....the cages look bare...there is nothing for the animals to get excited about

Lone wolves, stressed out polar bear, tiny caged large birds, just.... depressing. Honestly I'm not a fan of zoos to begin with, but went with some friends. One friend started crying when we got to the polar bear. Poor guy was so skinny and just pacing and twitching like a maniac. It was disgusting to see his condition. The wolves, all separated, looked depressed. The only animal that seemed happy was the rhino as the handler was feeding him. Other than that, really... it was sad to see. I can't recommend this at all.

Hi, Dear Olga B !
I'm happy to answer you here. I'm Japanese but I can understand you in English.
You wanna know 'bout the Shilka, right ?
I'm not working at Tennoji Zoo but I like to visit animals there and take pictures. Fortunately tomorrow I'll visit there for photography activity. OK I'll see the Shilka and take pictures. If it's hot day she'll bathe in the pool and enjoy swimming there. Look forward to my pictures.
It's hot and humid here in Osaka. Take care please.
