Address
Neighbourhood: Pontocho
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.

Enjoyed this one a lot- nice contrast with the World, where the crowd is much less foreign/cosmopolitan. The place to come if you're a gaijin in Kyoto x

My experience at Butterfly was my first time and night ever in Kyoto visiting from Atlanta, GA USA. While I was in Osaka the week before I had gone to Club Ghost where I met DJ Lead(owner of both clubs) and several others who mentioned to me if I went to Kyoto that I should check out a club called Butterfly. Upon entering the club, the entrance has to be one of my favorites because it feels like your entering a multi-color warp tunnel as the music gets stronger and stronger towards the main door! When I got into the club it was packed with people dancing and having a great time! The DJs were fantastic and the atmosphere was amazing! But what made the night most for me was the hospitality and warm welcome from the staff! If you are a club person and go to Kyoto, YOU MUST GO TO BUTTERFLY!!!!! I will definitely be going back on my next visit!!

Not sure why most of the reviews are four and five stars. We went on a Friday night and it was pretty trash (it could have been the DJs that night). Yes, they played hip hop but it was a lot of recycled songs (heard the some of the songs two and three times within a two hour period). The music they played was popular in the late 90s/early 2000s (not the classics either).
We arrived a little before 11:00pm. There were about six people in the club upon arrival. The club got busy around 11:30pm. The music got better closer to 1:00am. It could have been the night, but this was not that good of a club. Also, the club does not take credit cards (cash/yen only).

So I prettied up and decided why not! My last night in Japan I will go out with a bang. I got there a little before 9pm and I entered free of charge with a couple of drink tickets. Ok, so far so good. I ordered a piña colada which was not part of the designated repertoire so I paid out of pocket! No pb. I tasted and left it at that!
I was in a corner scoping out the place and watching the locals and one lone other foreigner like me-entertaining! The c club was still filling up. The place is not huge but I didn't feel crowded.
A group of Japanese girls stood next to me and quickly befriended me and I liked that. One guy tried to get my number...commendable!
Finally used my drink ticket and the drink was delicious. The DJ was very good and the music was eclectic to my great surprise and pleasure. He definitely knew how to get the crowd jumping.
I danced my last night away but called it quits after a couple of hours because of the cigarette smoking.
Yes, it's a fine establishment and as a foreigner I was pretty comfortable....I felt exotic there lol and the music was good.
Try it, have fun-I don't think you will regret it!

We were looking for night clubs and this place had awesome reviews from everyone. Thus, we decided to try it out. We realized that it's hard to find English speaking places in Japan after being here for more than a week.
You have to pay cover charge but it included 1 drink. Everyone was respectful of yr space even though the dance floor became crowded as the night went. They closed early, 1am. I'll definitely go again if I'm back in Kyoto.

That club was awasome.
unfortunately I wasn't in the weekend, so there weren't many people inside.
But the music was great and also the desing is very cool.
I think they need to work on atrract more tourist.
And the staff can be nicer - they are not so polite.

Do I need to be sure you order food?
How much is the admission?
Written 16 September 2015
We don't serve any food actually at butterfly. If you reserve a table, you need to order a bottle. If you do that, it's free to get in.

Hi, I wanted to clarify that when you make reservations, one has to pre-order already the food you will be eating and that all of your group members must order the same food? I found the latter strange. Can you
please help me clarify this point. Thanks.
Written 6 September 2015
No. You don't need to order any food if you don't need it. And also even if you order one, your other people also don't need to buy food. That's all about your decision.
Thanks.
