In itself not so much of interest. However many might recognise this place from the movie Last Samurai. Parts of this movie were recorded at this temple. Especially the long stairs towards the temple were used. Great movie by the way.

This temple is right in the middle of Kyoto but is quite " neglected " by the average tourist as every one prefers the Kinkaku-ji and a few other more famous attractions . The temple and the surrounding area is big but the very pleasant...More

The temple has rich history, but is under renovation and for us the main draw was enormous working 17th century bell, weighing 73 ton with 3 percent gold. The bell is striking. You can walk the rest of the grounds if you have time. The...More

Like so many structures in Japan, this is another amazing example of Japanese buildings. Surrounding by lovely gardens, the temple entrance is a wide and steep stairway that leads through into the maze of buildings. Renovations were being done so some areas were out of...More

With all the reviews I read talking about the immense and impressive size of the main hall, I was so disappointed to find the main hall closed for restoration. One of the employees told me it wouldn't be finished for a few more years. Still,...More

Walking past you won't miss the entrance here, as the main gate is absolutely massive! Behind the main gate is a large steep staircase leading up to the main area, though if you go to the right of the main gate there is an alternative...More

This temple was quite large with sprawling grounds and many steps. There was some sort of religious ceremony going on in the worship hall and we were allowed to go in and watch. It looked to be televised or recorded. No idea what was happening...More
