The area
Address
Neighbourhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

What a fantastic experience! The lesson started with Hoga, our instructor, who explained that Kembu means "sword dance". He then demonstrated the technique of handling the Katana (sword) which was safe to use as it wasn't sharpened. We learned a variety of moves from removing the sword from its sheath and reinserting it - a very precise maneuver. He then explained the historical background of the Samurai and its purpose and informed us that to show that a Samurai does not wish to create the impression that he's a threat, he walks with his elbows out from the torso - indicating that there is no reason to be feared. We then donned our costumes for the photo session. Following the photo session, we were joined by Ryu (another instructor). Both Hoga and Ryu performed an awesome presentation. I wish we could have recorded them as it was an exciting and impressive show requiring a tremendous amount of precision and agility. Arrangements for our 2 hour private visit was made through our travel agent so I'm unable to tell you the cost but it was worth every penny. This was a look into a cultural part of Japan providing us with some insight on its history. So glad we had this experience.

A friend and I did the half day course in swords and fans. We didn't do the costumes. It was a GREAT time! We were the only 2 people there at the time, so we had plenty of instruction. They gave us just enough history on kembu, and the samurai, then they taught us a "sword dance" and also how to twirl the fans. There was lots of time to handle the swords, they took a video of the final "show" for us, and posed us for a ton of GREAT photos too. One of the highlights of my time in Kyoto for sure.

This was a chance to handle the Japanese katana (long sword) in a small group class, learning a few basic moves. There was a bit of history and everyone got a chance to dress in samurai garb and pose for photos. Facilities were good and instructors were excellent.

It would’ve been better had we dressed up and train in the traditional outfit rather than just dress up after for pictures. I had higher expectations of this. But it was a different experience.

I have to emphasize that I am a martial artist by experience. Having trained Muay Thai, Tae Kwon do. Experienced snippets of Tai Chi and also Kung Fu as well as Eskrima. I am also spiritual in my beliefs. I wanted to experience martial arts in JPN. I had visited Tokyo and found that most Dojos' respectfully can only be attended by special invitation or of the like. I found Samurai Kembu on tripadvisor and was really intrigued. The hotel (Royal Park Kyoto) also had a flyer which showed the various options for this wonderful experience. I went for the full 3 hours with traditional dress and training. The photography was done by my father. Note any attendance by spectators is also chargeable.
I was greeted by my master outside one of the agreed station entrances. OutgoingTickets for the train are already covered within the cost (but in either case, this is minimal, so do not worry). My master was dressed traditionally and was able to humbly answer alot my questions. English was not his forte but this is certainly not a hindrance as his aura and positive attitude and extreme niceness was comforting. The train journey takes you out of kyoto and into the hills where we were greeted by another master and transported by A/C vehicle to the humble dwellings where I would train. I was Honoured to find out that it would be a one-to-one session (which is rare).

There are a few introductions which include an outline of the history of Samurai as well as the Dojo itself. Definitely interesting and thought provoking. I was then led into the Dojo where i would start as a novice; take a pic of a katana sword of my choice and start training. My master explains every element of the training with clarity and humility. From bowing to paying respects to yielding the katana to each and every move. He was patient, smiling and very clear in his words as to what I had to do. The training then leads to full dress - rather like a story from novice to beginner to intermediate. I was given a choice of traditional wear and then was dressed up accordingly by my Master. What followed was further instruction on various moves which came together to perform an initial kembu dance with and/or without the master. Its not a test all, so dont worry! Lots of help and support throughout. But for me, the traditional music and the story it involved was just beautifully spiritual. There are plenty of times throughout - during and in breaks that you can take pictures. My father was with me so this was convenient.
The class closed with a full demonstration from my Master and another. I can only emphasize how this was just so amazing to watch. These guys are "normal" looking every day guys but I HAVE NEVER seen such focus, prowess, pride, solidity and flow in any art form (of my own experience) that i saw in this short demonstration.
The words of my father - "i could feel the samurai spirit with these guys and the dance performed shook fear, emotion as well as beauty within me all at the same time"
My words - whether you are a beginner or are a martial artist - I would very much like to highly recommend you take time out to experience Samurai Kemb. The Masters, the History, the Humility aswell as the Physical - from holding and feeling the sword in my hand left me feeling enchanted and wanting more. I am highly Honoured that I was able to have this experience and can only thank my Master 1000 times for the experience as well as thank everyone at the Dojo for sharing this beautiful history with me. If I had more time in Kyoto, id go back here every day and would love to learn so much more.

.... Bless you and DOMO ARIGATO Master!

My wife suggested we see this after finding a review on-line. I was a little hesitant... down a narrow set of stairs in a small basement...!! But I'm so glad we went. It was a truly entertaining show and all our hosts were outstanding. We got to learn so much and were so happy we could pose for photos with the troupe afterwards. Next time we will try and find the time to do the full Samurai for a Day.

This was a high quality performance on a small indoor stage. The audience was very close to the action.

The performers displayed great ability and passion, and the narration and background music was very good.

The location is downstairs from a main street, only a few minutes walk from Sanjo Metro Station, and Sanjo Train Station on the Keihan train line.

After the performance, the audience can practice the use of a sword with the performers, and take photos. I believe that there are other Samurai related activities at the location during the day.

The staff speak English and were very helpful. I recommend this activity to both adults and children.

Excellent instructor who patiently went through the correct moves - perfect for first timers. Learn to move like a Samurai, dress like a Samurai and take home some great pics. Highly recommend this to all.

I had read about this and decided that it would be a great experience for the whole family. The show started off with an acted history of the Samurai, explaining about the Samurai culture and beliefs. We then dressed up as Samurai and had an hour long lesson in the art of handling a Samurai sword. Our teachers were patient, informative and extremely helpful. At the end of the evening we were presented with a certificate and photo capturing our evening. Our son has been talking about this for days, he says that it is one of the top things that we have done during our visit to Japan.

The Demonstration and class were great, it was the highlight of our Kyoto trip. My boys ( 7 & 10 ) are continually talking about the class. The staff was very accommodating and spoke English very well.
