Neighbourhood: Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

- Josie IinoCambridge, United Kingdom735 contributionsGo inside!I would say this is a must-visit for anyone travelling by train to Kyoto. It is a few minute walk from the station and so worth it. You can go inside, and although you should not take pictures, it is absolutely gorgeous. Brown wooden walls with stunning gold and white lanterns - it is a great place to be spiritual. When I visited, the yellow leaves matched the golden fabric of the building. It was absolutely magnificent. I spent around forty minutes simply admiring the interiors of these two spaces and it is a cherished memory, already.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 10 December 2023

This temple is huge and it's free to enter. For this visit to Kyoto, I found this to be the most impressive temple. The sheer size of the buildings within the complex is amazing. You can access the interior of some of the buildings. The colors and architecture are beautiful. A must visit temple when visiting Kyoto.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 March 2024
- LolaGo1Washington DC, District of Columbia6,632 contributionsPerfect Temple to Visit! This is my favorite temple in Kyoto. It is about 10 minute walk from the Kyoto Station. Entrance is FREE. No crowds here during my visit. I could easily walk around , enter the buildings, take photos and just enjoy my visit. One building has a small museum, showing the history of the founder of the Buddhist Group. Another beautiful building has the prayer area with mats covering the wooden floors, with several altar areas with movable dividers. Lightings are beautiful too. There are toilet facilities inside and outside the buildings. I like the intricate and ornate designs of the roofs and awnings.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 27 April 2024

It was destroyed by fire and rebuilt several times, ultimately in 1911 the 28 meter hall gate was built. The massive wooden pillars of the temple is something unique, not seen in other places. The temple closes by 5 PM. Must visit place in KyotoVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 May 2024
- Kris T143 contributionsTake your time to see the gardensReally beautiful gardens, it’s worthwhile to take a tour and have everything explained. Remember to take coins so you can make a prayer if you wish. I would make time to have o proper tour and skip the golden temple altogether, but of course it’s everyone’s own choice.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 June 2024

Pointing out, to be honest, that when I got there at the end of a long tour it was about to close, and therefore I wasn't able to visit it all and that what I saw I saw quickly, it seemed to me that the greatest advantage of the Hongan -ji be the majesty of size. I had read that it is the second largest wooden building in all of Japan, and in fact being in front of the gigantic portal makes (a nice) impression. The size of the internal space even leaves you a little disconcerted. However, compared to other treasures of Kyoto's religious architecture, I would not consider it among the most graceful. For this reason I was satisfied with a much less accurate visit than that of other temples in the city.

Our taxi driver dropped us off here while he waited. It was near closing time so we had to rush. The massive scale of this temple is quite impressive. The decor is beautiful and you really have a sense of awe when you are inside. The grounds are extensive as well so there are several things to see. There is also a small gift shop near the entrance. It's worth a visit if you have time.

While there are many temples in Kyoto with a lot of business, this place is free. I visited at around 10 o'clock, but it was a valuable experience because I was able to come across many disciples chanting the nenbutsu in the main hall. It is also interesting to see that QR coats can be used for offerings.

A beautiful temple complex with newly renovated buildings. We were amazed that there were hardly any visitors here. You can walk through the temple completely and take a great atmosphere with you. Beautiful wooden construction of the buildings.
