This little gem is next to Sanzen-in temple, so if you’re in the area, don’t miss it. The most beautiful garden I’ve ever seen. The pictures just don’t do the justice!!!

This temple is just an addition to other sites and a quaint shopping area after a twenty minute walk from the bus stop in Ohara, a northern area of Kyoto out in the country.

A picture, whether it is a painting or a drawing, is a framed piece of the world. In Kyoto, I have found several pieces of pictures which were cut out of the world by a window, whether is is circle or quadrilateral. In Hosen-in Temple, it is its pillars, beams, and floors that cut pieces of pictures out of its garden. When I walked along its passages, I saw a picture after a picture. When i sat at the depths of the room, I was glued to a picture and riveted to the spot for a long moment. Other visitors came in and faded out of the room, as if they were a part of the picture. The garden is called Benkan-en Garden, namely the garden which is hard to leave. Indeed.

It was perfect place for inner peace !
We call it is frame garden. Natural painting!
Red carpet is harmony with around nature.
I visted 3pm.because of hot weather nobody was at there (only me and firends!!
lucky!!). We enjoyed a cup of green-tea( malcha) and a jelly for complimentary(including ticket).

700years old tree and water jar (suikinkus)
made us so peaceful !!!

We got there by bus (no.17) for an hour from Kyoto station.

If you enjoyed Gion a lot, try suburb of Kyoto!

It worth to see travel hours.
Especially lighting up show season.
May be small size of temple, only graden with rotten woods, but you see infinity here, like watching outer space from window of spaceship.

If you got Japanese friend, ask them drive, cause only bus is available to get Ohara. No many bus. It may take an hour or hour half from Kyoto station.
Ohara area get dard very soon, and no one walk after dark. You gotta keep mind time. I had to run to catch bus.

Hosenin is right next to the Sanzen-in temple. It has 2 beautiful garden scene. One is an amazing 700 year old pine tree which is the oldest tree in Kyoto. The other is a beautiful graden scene that looks like a painting. Definintely worth a visit.

Didn't have high hopes or lots more "temple energy" left when we arrived here but the temple is definitely worth a visit! The garden is simply peaceful and majestic. Really nice. The temple is nice but what makes it amazing is the tea break in front of a fabulous tree. Nice place to relax and reflect. Definitely worth the visit!!!

This temple is one of my favorites. It's almost always quiet and does not have too many people inside. Plus if you visit Kyoto in summer, this temple is exactly what you need to escape the heat. Despite the fact that I've been here many times, I still find new amazing parts of landscape to enjoy. Simply amazing experience. Plus they give you free matcha and okashi to compliment your experience.

The pine tree is the only attraction here. We prefer sanzenin as well as jikko-in. Nothing much as it's kind of crowded with people. Jikko-in is beautiful
