This was a beautiful place to visit, away from the crowds that flood the bamboo forest. The garden's paths lead you up a hill for a view over Kyoto. The autumn colors were spectacular, however, I think the garden would be beautiful in any season....More

A really beautiful Japanese garden! One of the best experiences in Kyoto. Not only do you escape the crowds, but you also get to see a really Zen like garden which the creator used around 30 years to fulfill!

We thoroughly enjoyed our walk through this garden last winter, so did not hesitate to return. The crowd dispersed quite well, but occasionally we felt claustrophobic. Don’t miss the art and video of the esteemed actor, as well as the contemplative hideaway where you can...More

Don't get turned off by the slightly steep ¥1000 entrance fee, some of the other negative reviews for this villa and garden have been a bit mean-spirited. Yes, it's not a massive garden but there's plenty to see. If you've come to Arashimaya for the...More

After pushing through the crowded bamboo path we were quite hot and bothered. The reviews said this garden was quiet and secluded with lots of shade trees so we decided it was worth the Y1000 entrance fee. The first point of call is a large...More

Ok so this place is not the cheapest to get in to, at 1000 yen, but it was so worth it for me. The buildings are stunning, the gardens are immaculately kept, and if you're lucky (which we were) you will feel like you're the...More

For 1000¥ you can go in and get away from the crowd and have tea and some snack. This garden is built by the Japanese actor and offer some peaceful rest after the walk in the bamboo path.

The garden is quite small, ca 10-15 min walk. The paths are very narrow, enough for 1 person, without possibilities to amble. We visited in October, so not busy season, but the place was packed (as seem to be the case in most tourist attractions...More

For a beautiful, serene experience of Japanese gardens built on a hillside Arvind a typical Japanese old-style home, spend an hour at Okochi Villa’s gardens. This will be a welcome respite just steps away from the crowds of the bamboo forest.

I recommend this over the busy bamboo grove! The town is a tourist trap but this feels like an oasis a world away from the throngs of tourists.

Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best
eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved
Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji
Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea
houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the
riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature
lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The
area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and

It's a pleasant 15-min walk back to the station. Follow the bamboo-grove-lined sidewalk back to The main street in Arashiyama (the one lined with shops and restaurants). From there it's a short walk through a residential... More
