I believe the best way to enjoy this spot is to earn it, by hiking from the bottom. The usual path starts from Choin-in, follow the signs towards the Big Bell (the largest temple bell in Kyoto, I was told). Behind the bell are a set stairs that take you up hill. From there, it's leisure walk to the top... More

The views were awesome! We went late in the day to see the sun set and while we waited we stared at the beautiful colors of the trees!

Can't remember from where I read about this place, but I was determined to go once I saw the picture. A very nice lady in the tourist info office told me there's a Keihan bus going up to Shogunzuka on weekends. You can't use the Kyoto bus one day pass, but 230 Yen one way is very reasonable I think.... More

It's was my lucky day, I went there by driving a car. There's no public buses to shogunzuka, you only can go there by taxi or sightseeing bus and walking or hiking. When you reach the top of that hill you can see through the Kyoto city. The place is good for couples because look very romantic scenery.

A lovely viewpoint, on a clear day, to see Kyoto from above without jostling the crowds. The deck behind the temple building with the glass tea house is the more pleasant of the two viewing spots inside the temple. There is a free viewing deck a 100m before the temple at the public car park with more restricted vistas through... More

Though it was cloudy with occasional showers, I went to the Syoren-in temple and the Syogunzuka Dainichi-do temple. The former is located at the foot of Mt.Higashiyama, and the latter is on the top, an isolated part of the Syoren-in temple estate. Those are located on a part of the Kyoto Trail, a 70- kilometer hiking trail stretching from the... More

I consider this place to be a slightly hidden gem. It's a little inconvenient to get there if you're short on time/energy as it's a pretty long walk from the nearest stations and bus stops. Perhaps for that reason (and it being a rainy Monday afternoon), there were only a handful of people there when I went (and no large... More

I climb this hill often. It's only 15 minutes from the back of Maruyama park to the awesome view in this photo. Follow the trail up to the parking lot and view on the right. You can cross the parking lot and go right for another 10 minutes to hike to Kiyomizu temple. Follow signs (only in Japanese) marked as:... More
