Check out the market at Toji third Friday of the month. The grounds are beautiful. I went in summer so the lotus ponds were full of over blown blooms. Just gorgeous.

The East Temple and Pagoda are quite ancient although originals destroyed by fire. It's a short walk from Kyoto Station. The Flea Market on 21st of each month provides trash and treasures and simple street food.
