Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

One feels compelled to reflect on what happened (1995) and what I might have done, reacted or felt.
Bottom line - left full of admiration for the people's fortitude, resolve and determination, as well as amazement at their economic resolve. It was only 15 years ago.
Facing the City from Osaka Bay, it is just to the left.

I spent quite a lot of time in the Port area in general and the Earthquake memorial was the first place I wanted to see.
They've done it very well to be fair, some of the Port wall/dock has been left exactly as it was after the earthquake of 1995. There are many displays and photos about the damage and restoration as well as an audio display in many languages talking about the earthquake and how the Port recovered.
Free to enter and well worth your time.

The government kept the destruction done by the earthquake. This is a good reminder for us to treat better to our Mother Earth.

A visit to the park will give you an idea on how devastating the earthquake re-shaped Kobe harbour.
Make sure to listen to the history.

It is the best park that will bring comfort to your mind on this trip. The memory of the Kobe earthquake makes one part of the heart sad. However, this memorial park seems to be healing its wounds and making a fresh start.

Port of Kobe Earthquake Memorial Park was built to commemorate the 1995 earthquake. It is walking distance from the Meriken Park Oriental Hotel.

The installations and graphics describe how the whole catastrophy happened step by step. I have learnt a lot about earthquakes, why and how they occur and how Japanese people protect themselves from these natural disasters. It also interesting for the remnants from the earthquake from 1995, which have not been reconstructed deliberately and now they are a part of the park.
It's not probably a top attaction of Kobe, however worth taking a 1-2h stroll if you're around.

It was very interesting to see what is left of the destruction and how kobe picked itself up and grow to the place that we know today. The have a small area to show the damages and the growth of the area. Interesting place to visit if you are in kobe area. A nice place to enjoy the sea view and relax on a breezy evening.

Earthquake Park is at the Port of Kobe in Meirkan Park and dates to 5:46 am on January 17, 1995 when there was a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake resulted in 40,071 dead and close to 250,000 homes and buildings destroyed. There are vertical glass panels that present information of the earthquake. There are also concrete and light posts left from that destruction.

Hi , could I check which train station if I am coming from Tennoji station in osaka? How far do I have to walk from the train staton to the Port of Kobe earthquake? Many thanks!
Written 20 September 2017
Motomachi JR station is probably best coming from Osaka. It's the station after Sannomiya. The walk to the park is about 400m, think. Maybe 500 m. Hope that helps.

could you please tell me where is exactly located? and how can i get there by portliner?
Written 27 March 2015
Hi, please check at Google Maps "Meriken Park" - it's there.
I am afraid that there is no direct connection via portliner.
I suggest to get off at Boeki Center and then it's about 20 min walk, however maybe there's a better connection...
