- Leanne Culina-PenzaSydney, Australia833 contributionsA castle in the cityA very lovely, smaller castle in the middle of the city. As like many of the other castles throughout Japan you can wander to the top for a view of the park and surrounding areas. There is a small fee to enter and getting around the castle is very easy to navigate.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 21 September 2023

If you’ve got time come and visit, but don’t put it before the A-dome or museum. - liucy752Taipei, Taiwan1,593 contributionsA museum, an archaized buildingIt is actually a museum built after the old Hiroshima castle. Although not a real historic building, it is majestic and beautiful. Materials related to the history of Hiroshima are displayed inside. The content of the exhibition content is rich and vivid. The staff are professional, proactive and helpful. Unfortunately, there is no elevator. There are many stairs to climb in the museum. Lacking of elevator restricts the visit of disable or old people.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 October 2023
- alohatripperHonolulu, Hawaii1,707 contributionsA chance to be a samuraiUpon arriving in Hiroshima, we visited the castle, which is a reproduction of the original which was destroyed. Imposing on the exterior, the interior is merely a collection of exhibits with no authentic-looking rooms or furnishings. That was a surprise and disappointing. There are 4 floors with wide staircases. At the top is a view overlooking the city of Hiroshima. I liked the armory exhibits with replica armor, helmets, swords, and rifles. The grounds are nicely kept, and the double moat must have been intimidating to the enemy and gave them pause.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 14 November 2023
- LisaGordonSimonsLong Jetty, Australia668 contributionsA quick visit for a little Hiroshima HistoryNot so far from Hiroshima Station on the Red Bus, Hiroshima Castle is a stop en route to the other sights in Hiroshima. It is in large, peaceful gardens, surrounded by a moat with a shrine to the side. Note that this is not the original castle which was destroyed in the atomic blast. There are 5 levels to reach the top of the tower (survival of the fittest) with artefacts and history of the castle displayed at each level. (Curiously, an item bearing an image of a koala was to be found in one of the displays - not quite sure why). An hour is enough time to visit.Visited July 2023Travelled soloWritten 23 December 2023
- Globetrotter10079Seattle, Washington443 contributionsInteresting CastleIf you are a Senior Citizen , you can get a discount same price as Junior High student. This castle was rebuilt because, of the bombing of Hiroshima during WW 2. It featured some of the Shogun clothing. The castle is called the Karp castle. The baseball team is called the Hiroshima Carp named after the castle.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 20 February 2024
- chowsoGloucester, United Kingdom1,758 contributionsLovely smaller castleThe grounds are nice for a wander around, the castle itself is a beautiful structure. It’s smaller and less impressive than some of the other castles in Japan, but I think it’s still worth seeing. There are some interesting displays inside and the view from the top I nice. It’s not very expensive to get in but if you’re on a tight budget it may be worth skipping the admission fee.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 April 2024

- TassieTravellers99Launceston, Australia3,316 contributionsBeautiful exteriorThis is a beautiful castle and it can be seen from several blocks away when you are approaching it. The dark timbers are quite evocative and in stark contrast to the white washed castles we had seen such as Osaka. It is set in rambling informal grounds and is accessed via a main gate across a moat. We did not go inside but just enjoyed the overall setting.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 June 2024
- Gustavo BarrosSao Paulo, SP36 contributionsDisappointingI didn't know what to expect from the castles in Japan, but I certainly expected more than what I saw. Inside, it's not a reconstruction of the period, they're either empty or they're completely technological museums, which for me takes away some of the magic of visiting a castle. But the museum there was very interesting and the view was very beautiful.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 28 June 2024

I've been to Hiroshima a few times now and this last time was the first time I actually went inside the castle. The entrance price was very cheap and there was a lot more to see within then I originally thought. There are several floors to walk up, the upper floor has access to outside with a great view of the city. Other floors showcase armor, weapons, and other cultural items. Most of the displays do have English descriptions, so you can really learn a lot. I am used to European style castles, it was so interesting to read about this castle and learn about Japanese history and culture.

It was a beautiful day to walk the grounds. Blossoms just now starting to bloom. The museum Castle was well curated with many swords, armor, and historical documents on the history of the area in the feudal times. Nice view from the top in a clear day.

In addition to this being an impressive traditional Japanese castle (albeit rebuilt after the atomic bomb), it houses an impressive collection of artifacts and exhibits about the history of Hiroshima and the castle. The display of katana swords alone is worth the admission price. Definitely worth a visit.

We had a really good visit to the Hiroshima Castle in early January. It wasn't too busy when we went and we got a nice sunset view of Hiroshima in all directions from the top of the castle. The interior is interesting as well because they had history of samurai including some interactive exhibits and they had history of the castle grounds.
The castle is on an island and was rebuilt after WWII. The island has the foundations from the original castle that was built in the 1590s, some trees that survived the atomic blast and there is the Gokoku Shrine. Admission to the castle grounds is free and the admission to the castle is 370 yen. There are washrooms inside the castle and on the castle grounds that are free to use.
Our favourite part of the castle was the very cute mascot of a cat that wears the castle as a head. There are also lots of koi fish in the moat that surrounds the castle grounds.
There are busses and trams that frequent the area around the castle and the area is a 20 minute walk from the Peace Memorial Park and Atomic Dome area. There are a number of museums and good restaurants in the area as well.

I'm not the best person to review this place, because to be honest I'm not really that interested in historical castles. Having said that, this was a pleasant enough visit. You can go all the way up to the keep without paying, and then it's just a small fee to enter. The refreshment stands on the grounds of the castle sells good if expensive ice-cream, as well as sakekasu, which is an interesting drink I'm told isn't easily found many places.

he grounds are free to enter, and plenty of space to linger. There is a small entry fee for the castle itself, which is worth the visit. On your way up to the top, there is alot of historical objects and history to read about. Once getting to the top, there Is a great view of the city surrounding.

Can you enter the castle grounds after closing time? I just want to take photos, not enter the building.

Hi SeaPin666,
The Castle Tower is located in the far NW corner of a Main Compound which is itself surrounded by a moat with access to the Compound (across the moat) from the South (towards A-Bomb Dome) and West (towards Hiroshima Station) sides only. Although there is a "lower" and "upper" level to this Main Compound the Castle Tower itself is not really elevated with the lowest level of the Tower probably no more than 20 feet above the level of the moat. Approaching the Castle Tower from inside the Main Compound, views of the Tower are largely obscured by the surrounding trees. With trees in full foliage when I visited, all I could glimpse through a gap in the trees was the top two storeys of the five-storey structure (see my review dated September 2019).
The best view of the Castle Tower is obtained from outside (across the moat) from the NW corner of the Main Compound. Suggest you take the subway from Hondori (2-stops) to Johoku Station, just past this NW corner. Follow the moat along the North side, where towards the NE corner you can look back and photograph the Castle Tower framed by trees in the foreground. Continue following the moat down the East side and enter the Main Compound on the East Side. Please be aware that because of the low elevation of the Castle Tower, it is always likely that you will get the odd high-rise building encroaching on the shot, and if you are planning to take night shots of the Castle, this may be more of a nuisance.
The Castle Tower itself is open 09:00 ~ 17:00. I am not aware of any opening/closing times for the Main Compound but their website indicates that the Castle is lit from sunset until 22:00, which suggests that it maybe still accessible after dark.
My advice for Hiroshima; visit Former Bank of Japan (heat-damaged strongroom), Ground Zero (epicentre of explosion) and Orizuru Tower (next A-Bomb Dome); don't venture to Miyajima Island unless you can devote a whole day to it, and if you have the time nearby Kure is worth a visit (specifically the 'Yamato' Museum and the JMSDF Museum opposite).
