Well, some say it is just a bridge like many other bridges in China and others are interested in the legend of the bridge. The legend tells the story of a long snake from the river falling in love with a man. The snake changes herself in a beautiful woman and lives for many years with a man. One day a Buddhist monk finds her out and transform her back into a snake and she disappears again into the river. Apart from the legend, the real history is that the bridge was very important for the trading of any kind of goods along the river especially tea and silk. It is very ancient and mystique and worthy a day trip for a very healthy exercise and spending a nice time with family and your kids instead of staying at home glued to the handphones.

The story goes something like this: At certain (extremely rare) times during winter, when the bridge is covered in snow, because of the slope of the bridge, and angle from which the sunlight hits it in the mornings, the snow on one side is molten leaving a black road, while the other side is still covered thickly with white snow. This black/white contrast gives the bridge a "broken" look, hence the name. However, the opportunity to see this effect in place is one of the rarer - is not THE rarest - sights in hangzhou.

Only legend can explain why this bridge is named Broken Bridge as the bridge is not actually broken.
Once there was a magic white snake that lived in the lake. She eventually turned herself into a lady and fell in love with a handsome man. They lived happily for many years until one fateful night when a mean and magic Buddah turned her back into a snake again. They were then tragically separated and even though the husband still loved her she disappeared under the waters by the bridge where they once fell in love. So it is really a broken hearted bride

Before we go to visit Broken Bridge, we take it granted that this bridge is broken when seeing its name. Actually Broken Bridge with Thawing Snow doesn’t mean the bridge is broken and we appreciate the snow on the Broken Bridge. It’s a view that when we see this Bridge from a far and high angle, the bridge is outstanding, so after the snow thaws, the bridge looks like a broken silver chain, so ancient people named it Broken Bridge with Thawing Snow. The best season to visit is winter when the bridge is covered with snow. It’s very romantic to walk through snow on the bridge.

This bridge has a very romantic and beautiful story so most of the chinese have special feeling about this bridge. Try to go there avoid public holiday, or you only see the huge amount of people there which make you only uncomfortable, and you can't enjoy the nice view through the bridge. If you lucky go there snowing day, you will see one of the most beautiful view in China. Enjoy and have a walk there, you will love it.

Duan Bridge (or Broken bridge) is a very nice bridge at the beginning of the Bai causeway. It has a lovely aesthetic arch and is a symbol of Hangzhou. It is much better enjoyed from a distance since you can't fully appreciate it from up close and the throngs of Chinese tourists on it definitely detract from the experience. It is worth seeing, but not lingering on. If you do a loop along the causeway and back up Beishan Road, you can get great views of it with the city in the background.

This is the bridge linking to the Bai Causeway. It’s one of the top 10 scenic views of West Lake. From its name, you can assume that the scenery will be prettier in winter time. Good place for people watching.

Duan Bridge should be the best tourist spot around Xihu. There were lots of visitors around the area and walk over the bridge to take nice photos in both day time and at nights. We saw this Bridge being crowded with people when the first snow fell in winter and the atmosphere was really wonderful. Hope to come and squeeze into the crowd on this Bridge sometime in winter when snowing in this area.
