Rent an ebike from ebike sales shop and ride along the southern shore of Lake Dian Chi. There are some access roads (usually dirt) where you can approach the lake. There is also a Wetlands park where you can walk alongside the lake a bit and get a nice view of the lake. The park is free but you have to pay for ebike or car parking.
You can see locals fishing in their sailboats. Would love to find a local to take me out one day - will have to investigate that.

Dian lake is a beautiful place to visit, it’s one of the top spots in Kunming. It’s a huge Lake, Hills are in background, nice relaxed environment with water birds are flying around. Speed boats cruising around with tourists, some large cruise vessels are also seen in the distance. The waves are quite big for a lake, quite an energetic lake. There are crowds of people roaming around. Nice walk way along lake. It is worth the trip out to the lake to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the lake.

During each November to April the following year, Kunming city will be thronged with ten thousands of blacked-headed gulls. They will fly across the vast and deserted area of chilly Siberia and Russia all the way to Yunnan, the lost Shangri-la and a paradise on earth.
With warm weather and abundant food, they live very happily and healthy here during the 180 days. You can feed them in Cuihu Lake( Green Lake) during this period, and feel the merry atmosphere of local people. Cuihu Lake is the “Vienna” for the local people, a base camp for local singers and musicians. During morning or dawn, middle-aged or senior-age group will gather here habitually, singing and dancing every day at this park and humming the original flavor Yunnan folk music. If you want to see the Tibetan dance or Dai Minority’s dance, you can visit Jinyudao( Golden Fish Island).
Tips:
Admission Fee of Dianchi Lake: Free
Advised tour hour: two hours
Best Travel Season: With annual temperature of 15 degree, Kunming well lives up to its name as the "Spring City", "Flower City" and "Green City". You can visit it all year around and appreciate blossoms in spring, enjoy breeze and lush vegetation during summer as well as feed the black-headed gulls during autumn and winter.
Transportation: From Kunming train station to Dianchi Lake: Take Bus 24 or 44 and get off at Haigeng Park.
Tour Route Advised: you can visit the West Hill first, and then take the cable car at Longmen. The fee is 30RMB. Or you can leave from Daguan Park by boat. Cycle around this lake is good idea.
Special tips: Though with an altitude of only 1800m, sunshine here is still a threat to your delicate skin. Sunscreen (30+ to 50+) and cap are necessary items; Be aware not to get into the illegal taxi; Rain often visit Kunming unexpectedly, but it goes quickly also. You can bring an umbrella.

This is a brown lake with rough waters and a lot of sea gulls. It is crowded and noisy. Dirty water and dirty surroundings. Wish I had skipped it. I literally walked out, saw the lake, turned around and left. Nicest thing was the mountain in the background.

We were there on a Sunday morning. A very pleasant stroll and you can watch the local folks dancing and exercising. Between October and April you can watch the seagulls migration. Many vendors selling bird food and you can feed them.

Dian Chi Lake (aka Dian Lake) is the largest natural freshwater lake in Yunnan Province. The lake is very close to Kunming and we hired a taxi from our hotel and paid CNY 150. The lake is surrounded by four hills. The place we visited is known as Haigeng Park on the shore of the lake. There is a walk way to go deep inside the lake with glass bottom to get a good view of the surrounding beautiful landscape. You have to pay CNY 20 pp. The water of the lake is topaz green. There is facility for a cable car ride to get a aerial view of the lake that costs CNY 30 pp. The area has nicely cured park with restaursnts. You can go for a boatride inside tgs kajs as well.

Took a taxi out to the lake for about 30RMB from the City Center. Really pretty lake and the seagulls were fun to see. Lovely big boardwalk to stroll along. We were there for the Spring Festival so there were lots of food booths for good snacking. We didn't get to the cultural village. We found it really hard to get a taxi back to the city center took about 30 minutes to find someone who would drive us back so it migh be good to plan this accordingly.

This is a beautiful park and lake, with colonies of black-billed gulls from Siberia flying around. They are smart birds, and love being feed by sightseers and those of for a leisurely walk. With thousands of birds in the air, some sightseers will get hit by falling bird droppings . . . Oh well, getting hit by bird droppings is considered to be a sign of good luck.
During my visit, it appears that over 50% of the sightseers are devoting the majority of their time to feeding and taking photos of the gulls.
