Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We took a bus followed by chairlifts up to the TOP of the hill, then walk our way down . This is the easier way to see the site. The steps were painstakingly chiselled out along the cliffs by a Taoist priest and his followers in the Qing dynasty over 90+ years, can be slippery on a rainy day. The view was good.

We visited this place as part of a tour, at first we were not so interested to visit here. But when we got there, our opinion changed.
The hill is located on the outskirts of Kunming city and according to its name is located on the west side of the lake and kunming city. Many locals and local Travellers have visited this place.
On this hill there are temple complexes and paths to the cold hills because of the many lame trees. From above the hill we can see the beauty of the city and the green Kunming lake.

We are a group of 5, we took the pink line train to Western Hills station (last stop, 5 yuan each from central Kunming), followed the crowd's direction and walked for a few minutes until we got to a ticket station on the right. The lady explained the recommended route, which is to take the green bus up to the beginning of the chairlift then take the chairlift up to the top of the mountain.

We brought our own food but there are a few food vendors at the top of the chairlift and plenty of fruit vendors.

There is a lookout about 10-15 min walk up a hill (very steep) from where the chairlift drops you off. The view is great if you can make it up there.

We then followed the signs down to the dragon gate. The dragon gate area is on a narrow cliffside and has many shrines along the side. Not long after the gate, an electric car picked us up and took us back to where the green bus starts its route to take us back near the railway station.

Each mode of transport (green bus, chairlift, electric car and green bus to return) requires a separate ticket to scan. All tickets were bought together, costing 90 yuan each. There is a 15 yuan discount for students and half price for people over 60.

The dragon gate is a good half day trip. We visited the Yunnan nationality museum (free entry, closes at 4.30pm) afterwards, which we took the 94 bus to, from near the ticket station.

We enjoyed 3hours at Western Hills and dragon gate and found this was plenty. We caught the Metro line 3 to Western Hills, walked 100m to the ticketing office and purchased a combo ticket for 88RMB each (included shuttle bus, chair lift, entrance to park and Dragon gate). Don't listen to the ladies who pounce on tourists as they come out of the metro - they will try and con you into taking a private tour with them when this is so unnecessary - its an incredibly easy place to self-guide.
The fresh air was great (we could actually see we escaped the pollution haze of Kunming city), quiet atmosphere and if you go soon after opening you'll beat the tourist crowds.
The Dragons Gate walk on the cliffside is very impressive! The chair lift is open and perhaps not for the faint hearted (but theres other ways to ascend to Dragons Gate)
I wouldn't say its a must do but if you've got the time, its a nice place to visit.

Very easy to get to from Line #3 on the Subway (pink line). You can purchase all the tickets you need to take the bus, the cable car and entrance to the park. It was very easy! Ignore the ladies selling you the "mini-bus" and just walk to the ticket counter. Tickets were only 90 RMB per person.
The view is stunning. There is alot of climbing up and down stairs. You can opt to not take the bus or cable car and do all the walking yourself - good luck! It's steep and far.
Just think that somebody thought it was a good idea to carve the tunnels out by hand so that we could enjoy the view. It's just amazing to think about the history here as well as the view.
There are some good, and interesting food stalls at the entrance as well.

Very nice area to visit to get above the smog. Take the #3 metro to the end of the line, West Hill Station, and exit. Follow the crowds for a couple hundred meters, down the stairs on the left and you reach the park entrance. Buy a combo ticket for 90 yuan, subtract 15 if you are over 60 and have proof. This will include a bus up, the chairlift, and all entrance fees. Walk down past the grottoes, which are well worth seeing, and catch an electric cart back to the bus stop. Hop the bus back and you are done. Can spend four or five hours there. Very cool in the morning, cold even. Don’t miss the temple near the top after you get off the chairlift. Bit of a hike up stairs but worth it for the view of smoggy Kunming.

we was there at 15Th Apr. . the weather is good. the easy way to visit the all site is by cable car.
the cable car divided in 2 parts.
part 1: from downside the lake to enterance dragon gate.
part 2: from dragon gate to top temple above dragon gate.
so it s easy to visit most of sites by walking down!!!
but i think the cable car's price is high.
for part 1: 40 RMB (one way)
for part 2: 25 RMB (one way)
so you can visit the site whithin 3-4 hours. from cable car part 1.
you can miss the cable car part 2 and walking up to dragon gate . it take you 1.5-2 hours to go up . the way is full of entertainment and you can enjoy the temples, gates,...
so 1.5 hours is not feel long. you catch dragon gate soon!
for comming back there were bus to kunming .
time needed to visit: from kunming 5-6 hours.

We took the metro line 3 to the western hills stop. From dongfeng square it takes 20-25 minutes. After you get out, you will see everyone walking in the same direction southeast. There’s a shuttle bus close by that I recommend taking if you only care about the dragon gate and not the temples. It’s 12.5 yuan per person one way. The first temple is about 2km walk uphill from the metro and you also have the option to take the shuttle bus there. To walk all the way up is about 7 km so unless you want to do that, take the bus.

At the end of the bus ride is the dragon gate scenic area. From here, you can buy your entrance ticket, cable car ticket, and mini bus ticket for 65 yuan per person. The cable car takes you to a cafe area where you then walk down for half an hour to get to the dragon gate. Then it’s another 15 minutes down to an area with mini buses that drives you back to the beginning of the scenic area. You can then take another shuttle bus back down to the entrance to the metro.

You can climb the 1000 stairs from the bottom at the lake or take the cable car. We took the cable car. At the base there are clean toilets and a fast food restaurant that was quite good. You can take a tram or the chairlift from there. If you take the tram it takes you to the start of another 1000 stairs where you will pass different temples and finally arrive at the Lions Gate. If you take the chair lift you arrive above Lions Gate and are able to walk down to it. We didn't take the chair lift and wish we would have as it is quite a climb and the air is thin because of the altitude. The views of Kunming and surrounding country are spectacular form the multitude of vantage points along the way. Go on a clear day!

You can take subway 3 till the last station at Westhill which is very convenient. When you alight, you walk around 5min to reach the ticketing counter to get your tickets (RMB 88 combo) up to see the various places of interest like Dragon Gate, temples and viewing pavilions. The ticket RMB 88 includes the bus to & fro the park entrance. Of course u can save by walking but it's a very long and winding road up to the park entrance with no proper pavements, which I dont recommend. Many people were just walking on the road which was quite dangerous but it seems the locals are used to it. Instead, take the bus from the ticket counter to the park entrance. At the park entrance, you can take the ski lift which is supposed to give u a breathtaking view of Kunming but unfortunately, it was very foggy and drizzling when we went up so we missed the nice views. Alternatively, u can hike up! When u r done, a bus will bring u back to the park entrance and there you will transfer to another bus to bring u back where u came from near the ticketing counter. The bus will drop u outside the food street where u can shop and eat. The food street offers quite a variety of food and snacks. You can easily spend 3-4h at this place.
