Brewmaster Jon Therrian has brought the wonderful world of Craft Beer to Xi'an. Sipping on his full bodied lagers, ales and stouts - you might believe you are sitting in brew pub in Portland, Oregon, not central north of China. His original nano brewery at Near Wall Bar recently expanded to a second full size brewery "Xian Brewery". It is located fashionable district of Qujiang near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Brewery Xian has a main floor brewery/taproom, an upstairs restaurant with 12 taps, full kitchen, music stage, and a third floor nanobrewery; everything is bigger and better. The quality doesn't stop with beer - the food is also tops!

The Near Wall Bar is quite Fabulous. It has such a welcoming feeling to all that come. Every time I visit the bar, I feel the same like part of the place.

They have wonderful bands that come in plus they also do pub quiz once a month. The drinks and beer are also extremely reasonable.

Wonderful Place to go out to!

We visited this place with friends for some western food. First, watch out for the grouchy waitress. Wow! She not very inviting when we walked in. We asked where we could sit, she stated anywhere. So we choose the big table in the corner because we had 12 coming. She said that we could not sit there because it was for 16 people. Ended up meeting more friends in back room. Told table next to us is reserved so we could not have chairs. We were there for 3 hours and nobody showed up for her so called reserved table. Obviously she does not like foreigners.

Menu was fairly extensive for choices but when it come time to order we were told that they only have two choices tonight, 2 kinds of burgers. So ok we will have burgers. Then she only wanted to take orders from a few of us, and we had to remind her we all wanted to order. We all ordered at same time but food arrived over the period of 1 hour. Very poor service, good thing we don’t tip here, she did not deserve anything. The service staff can make it pleasurable but not here.

This was our second visit here and the first was not much different. Next time I’ll go down the street to the hostel, they are much friendlier, have a better menu and care about their customers. How sad for a craft brewery.

I'm all in favour of entrepreneur spirit but you have to wonder if enthusiasm has over reached capability here. We dropped in late afternoon, I tried two of the beers, both were green and needed time to settle and mature. Before you write me off as another Brit who wants warm real ale and doesn't understand that beer is ice cold etc... Your wrong. I worked in the license trade both in the UK and Europe for a lot of years.

As for the food I had the beef burger, cheese & bacon with potato wedges, my partner the fish and chips. If your expecting American portions your out of luck. The beef burger etc was pleasant enough, with the wedges being excellent.

The fish and chips on the other hand my partner refused to eat, ( so I ended up with 2 meals). The fish took the form of fish nuggets and had a distinct after flavour I could not place. The chips were non existent being replaced by more potato wedges, ( lucky me).

The Chinese staff were polite, knew enough English to explain the menu, (which is fairly limited), and discuss the beer a little.

The prices are aimed squarely at the ex-pat / tourist market, (some 2-3 times the Chinese equivalent), something that will I suspect tell against the venue in the long term.

Looking around you can see that the venue is geared up to show sport during the day and some form of guitar live music in the evening. The feel is basic with heavy duty wooden benches and tables. It may well come alive of an evening.

Given time I'm sure this could be an excellent bar/venue, but at the moment it really needs to get a couple of decent beers as a base. Chocolate, coffee and citrus beer might be fun to try, but long term you need some reliable beers folks will return to drink long term.

Interestingly, the bar is in an area that has a number of Chinese craft / specialist beer outlets. One of which is selling both 'Harbin 1900' and 'LaoShang' beer ice cold. Both these are derived from Russian brew masters and currently out class the in house base offerings by a mile.

The beer was average in quality. We had one of each available, and nothing either wowed us or was undrinkable. However, we got a pizza as a snack and it was one of the worst pizzas we ever had. It must have been a frozen one that they burned pretty badly, so if you come, don't expect to eat there. They had traditional "squat" toilets, and the decorations were pretty cool.

This brewery is one big disappointment. The staff is rude, unprofessional and very unhygienic. The toilets are so disgusting that you wonder if they can keep a clean bar/kitchen. The staff behind the bar is so obvious unhygienic that it looks like they had no proper training. The foreign owner/brewer told us to go to their flagship store as this was the best of the two locations. It was one big disappointment. The western food is not good and very Chinese. We ordered two burgers and they came 30 minutes after each other. They forgot the order and laughed in my face when I asked where the second burger was. Both burgers and wedges were cold. Beer is ok but way overpriced. We were here on a national holiday, but the whole place was empty while other places have a waiting queue. Seems like more people don’t want to risk getting a disease, and don’t want to be treated like unwanted guests.

By a semi-professional beer drinkers standards the beer is excellent. It’s just a shame the service is sultry and downright rude. Drop in, but don’t linger as you’re not wanted.

I was here 3 days ago and payed 30RMB for a Kolsch. And it was about 5pm in the afternoon so no event. I came here again and now it’s 45RMB. It’s a weekday, a Wednesday. Again, no event. I know I can’t speak Chinese but that’s not cool. I asked the bartender via google translate. She looked and pointed to the other bartender. And ignored me.This place sucks.
