We had a fun and interesting time shopping and tasting some of the Shaanxi street foods in this ancient China type market area. It is helpful to have WeChat Pay. I was originally hesitant to use it, but now find it to be a very convenient and safe way of paying.

We wanted to try new place to eat apart from Muslim street and got to know about this place. This place have bunch of restaurant and small munchies stores which I understand are purely Xian cuisines. This is a small food court kind setup, nicely decorated or themed and yeah we loved the food. strongly recommend one to visit.

Great place to try street food if you’re concerned about eating street food. It’s a newly built area in traditional style, so maybe it doesn’t feel as genuine as it feels like an outdoor cultural museum. Offers street food from a good variety of vendors and some tourist knick-knacks.
We had a great time here on our first evening when we didn’t want to venture too far from the hotel. It was a lot of people but not more than us managing to navigate with a stroller.
Some comments here have been about the payment system, which we thought worked very well. Just top up a card with any amounts at one of the booths, and cash out the money you don’t need when you leave.

Our driver, Master Li, introduced us to YongXing Fang. Just like Muslim Quarter, this place set food, shopping and culture in one place, but this mainly Han Chinese related. This place was converted from Tang Dynasty business district. The entire commercial district is very large, and is divided into Guanzhong, southern Shaanxi , northern Shaanxi. So basically you can find all the authentic Shaanxi cuisine here.

We had our dinner at "Sanyuan old Huang family". The restaurant started since 1830 and we decided to try a few special food on their menu. We ordered a buckwheat steamed dumplings, 'Wo Wo' noodle, 'Ge Da' noodle and 'spicy box'. The 'Wo Wo' taste good and springy. Looks a bit like Orecchiette, maybe this is what Marco Polo brought to Italy. Our favorite is the 'spicy box', these "boxes" are filled with leek and meat, spicy and delicious. I'm never a fan of buckwheat noodles, but this buckwheat dumplings are delicious, maybe due to the fragrant dipping sauce. The most special one is the 'Ge Da' noodle. It is said that Empress Dowager Cixi decided to give a test to her Shaanxi chef, asking for only one dish of noodle to show the characteristics of Shaanxi noodle. This 'Ge Da' noodle was invented upon such test and the Empress was very impressed. This "Ge Da" noodle has 3 ways to eat: one, mix the spicy oil plus minced meat to the noodle; two, dip the noodle into sour soup as sauce; three, add the minced meat and spicy oil into the sour soup and have noodle soup.

After our dinner, we explore the place and had a lot of snacks. One of the most impressive is the steamer cake. The owner of the shop is very cordial. Understand that we are from Malaysia, he invites us to try his product and asked us to take pictures with him too. According to the owner, this steamer rice cake is a unique traditional snacks from Guanzhong, with a long history. This steamer cake is make with glutinous rice, candied dates, and red beans.

However, of all the snacks, our favorite is always the "Old Tong Guan Rou Jia Mo"(老潼关肉夹馍), let's call it Chinese Burger. You can get chinese burger everywhere in XiAn. However, the ones make by Old Tong Guan has crispier pastry and taste really good.

Besides food, Yong Xing Fang also has many cultural performances. We do not have time to explore all but I'm interested in the "throwing bowls of wine". With 5 Chinese Yuan, you can get a bowl and throw it on the wall after you finish it. Seems fun.

My local friend recommended I come to yongxing fang instead of Hui Muslim Street which was touristy and overpriced . This is the place most locals come to for local food. Buy a card and you pay using your card. Leftover money in the card will be refunded if you bring it to the centre of the square. Lots of good local food with places to seat. I reached there at 9pm and it was open till 11 /12pm. Had some donkey meat, lots of local delicacies!

Our native Xi'an friends introduced us to this huge foodie destination as an alternative to the overcrowded, touristy Muslim quarter near the Drum Tower. The food options at Yongxing Fang were more diverse and authentic. Busloads of Chinese tourists unloaded at Yongxing Fang when we were there, so it is still a tourist draw, but better in quality and cost slightly less than the Muslim quarter restaurant stalls. Also, service was better.

Although a sign at the entrance says that the area is open until 1 a.m., you really need to get there hours before that if you plan on eating at any of the restaurants tucked away in its alleys. My wife and I arrived at 9 p.m. the other night hoping for a tasty meal. We went through five restaurants before finding one that had any food left, and they only had but one noodle dish left from their menu.
Some of the street snacks look good, but the other vendors mostly offer very touristy products at tourist prices.

Great market with a wide variety of delicious food options!! FYI everyone in China uses an app on their phone to buy food and these food stalls don’t accept cash or card so stop by a booth at the front of the market to put money on a card the stalls will accept! Worth it! Fun & delicious 🍜

It is a very good place to try the Shaanxi local food, however they don’t accept cash, which means you need either to pay by a card purchased by the entrance or WeChat Pay. So we got nothing to eat, just made a sightseeing.

This is a very local/authentic food market in a historic area with no westerners. My wife and I discovered this while walking on Saturday at around 5pm so that is when I would visit because I am not sure what of its regular hours. There are beautiful buildings, multitudes of street food booths and even people drinking homemade alcohol in clay cups and then breaking the empties by throwing them in a pile of broken rubble. I'm sure there is an interesting history behind it. This is definitely worth a look and is free of charge. See my pictures... Enjoy!
