Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Like any other Chinese cities, Guilin has a couple pedestrian streets scattered around the city. Zheng Yang Street, which has the best location, is undoubtedly the most popular. Touristy in many ways, it is the one-stop solution for visitors from restaurants, souvenir shops to travel agencies for day tours. It is worth a stroll at night.

This is a great tourist shopping and good street, with plenty of little shops and restaurants and a lot of great side streets. Be sure to explore a round and get a look at the interesting architecture. There’s a pagoda nearby that overlooks the river and if you walk a bit you can reach the park with the sun and moon pagodas as well. The street food is cheap and quite good though the restaurants are a little pricier. There are some decent bars with live music but the drinks on offer aren’t great. The cocktail we had was extremely subpar, and they only offer half the beers in bottles or by the glass, the rest are only sold in packs of six or twelve, or as large pitchers, which is not ideal if you are alone or with just one significant other. Still, it’s lit beautifully at night, and there’s a main square with cultural performances. One night there was a live theatre show about the history of Guilin while another night a band was playing promoting their new EP. definitely worth visiting!

ShanHu BeiLu area is centrally located, close to the Sheraton Hotel, the Shan Hu Lake and its Sun and Moon Pagodas, as well as to the Zhongshan Road. The area is modern, colorful and nice, with countless little shops and stalls selling souvenirs and all kinds of other things (bargaining is a must), also bars and restaurants. It makes for a pleasant and interesting stroll, especially in the evening when the whole place is brightly lit and kind of comes alive, with plenty locals but also tourists, out for shopping, eating or just enjoying a nice walk ...

Since we were staying at the Sheraton, the staff recommended we visit this street in the evenings. It’s a lively pedestrian area with a good mix of brightly lit stores selling food, apparels and souvenirs. The food is mostly restaurant styled with seating and service as opposed to street-type food. There are side roads along this stretch which are also sell lots of stuff and might be more worthwhile if you want a more local experience.
Just parallel to this street is BinJiang Road which runs along the LiJiang River. This is a nice stretch to walk in the evenings when the riverbanks and bridges are lighted up with vibrant colours. The ShanHu lake is also nearby with the beautiful pagodas at night.

I think this is the place to go if you want to try the local food. It's busier and prettier at night. We came back during the day, definitely less people around.

This is near the city centre and is a good walking area for preservation of old buildings. A contrast to modern development. Look for silver merchants. Plenty of them. Had my bracelet repaired and strung for 15 rmb!!!

This is a wonderful colourful area of Guilin which is a must see. Full of music, bars, restaurants & other shops, all featuring the marvellous Chinese culture.
Choose from many types of eating stalls or restaurants to sample the local delicacies. We visited here on two occasions and were amazed by the people around and the great atmosphere.
