    Colorful history of Guangzhou
Canton was a key trading port in Chinese history, especially after the Opium War. This is the perfect place to understand Western influence in Guangzhou. Surrounded by some nicely preserved traditional Cantonese towers, the Sacred Heart Cathedral is a contrast to the Chinese city. The stained glass inside is particularly impressive. Free admission.

Nice cathedral that stood the time of history!
Located at Yide Road near the Haizhu Square in the city center, this beautiful over 130-year-old Roman Catholic cathedral is a holy and peaceful site in the bustling and busy urban area. From our hotel at Qiaoguang road, we walked here within 15mins of leisurely paced walk. The cathedral was nice, aka the Notre Dame of Guangzhou (similarly to that in Ho Chi Minh City) with the same architectural style. Unfortunately, on the day of our visit, the Cathedral was closed to the public for some private events and so we could not stand outside to take photos and read the intro from the information plagues. And along the section of the cathedral was small square with 2 rows of shophouses and cafes and right next was a long stretch of shophouses selling dried foods, toys and stationery which was very crowded, noisy and full of vibes but within the cathedral area, it was quiet and peaceful, what a contrast, all within 100-120m of distance!

    Almost seems out of place
While touring Old Town, many are probably surprised to come across Sacred Heart Cathedral. It is a very beautiful, gothic-style, granite-walled, Roman Catholic church, and I have previously attended mass in this cathedral. Portions of it were recently restored. A house of prayer and peaceful place.

    Historical church
Me and my two daughters visited this church while we were in Guangzhou. Apparently this was one of the more popular tourist destination. Understand that this church is more than 100 years old and therefore worth a visit currently the church is still having masses every week and we were allowed to enter the church premises when we were there. The church was a big contrast to the Chinese architecture in. Guangzhou and this was interesting.

The site of the cathedral was originally the residence of the Viceroy of Guangdong and Guangxi during the Qing Dynasty. During the Second Opium War, the residence was completely destroyed, and Viceroy Ye Mingchen was captured by the British. The cathedral was designed by the French architect from Nancy, Leon Vautrin.

We went there and I was surprised to see people walking around taking pictures even while there's a priest in front delivering the homily. It's a nice place but the locals and the tourists don't respect it that much.

Closed for CNY but impressive to look at. Great area for walking, we also saw the mosque nearby and spent some time in a cafe next to the cathedral.

Attractive, pious and ancient. This is a Roman Catholic Church, built of stone. It is a tourist attraction for both Chinese locals and foreigners. The stain glass windows tell amazing stories.
