We enjoyed our walk through the zoo and seeing the animals. Very nice collection of animals, and some amazingly beautiful statues. But the highlight, is the wonderful animals. Park animals seem to be well carred for, healthy, and in good shape.

it's always packed and swimming with children, like all zoos, but it's the condition of the animals that makes my heart hurt. The tigers are too skinny, obviously underfed, and the big bears and tigers and lions are confined into tiny little cells. They don't move because they have no room to move. Meanwhile, common animals like raccoons have a full field to wander and travel around. Disgusting. Please do not support this cruely.

This zoo doesn't understand the meaning of the words "conservation" or "education". For Guangzhou Zoo it's all about shoving animals in small cages for tourists to gawk at (and, more often than not, throw food / bottles / rubbish into the enclosures). Every animal looked miserable in their concrete and metal cages. Made me so sad. Please don't support this business.

It's only RMB20 for a regular ticket. So cheap but really it's worth paying more for a responsible and caring zoo that focuses on conservation and breeding instead of this 1950s style place.

See my pics of the bears in concrete enclosures. Shocking. Can't believe these kinds of zoos still exist. This place should be shut down.

Train Line 5 to Zoo station (South Entry). Very convenient. Almost all relevant writing is in English is a big help. The static displays are great fun, the Dinosaur history display along with the Zoo's 60 year history was great to see.
The animals were mostly in suitable enclosures with no grass. I do hope the animals are rotated to greener pastures on occasions but somehow, I don't think so. It's an inexpensive outing and a good way to entertain the kids too.

In my honest opinion, the zoo is under maintained. and the story u heard about China sanitary is very true, i saw it with my own eyes to see the horrible restroom in the zoo area.. i threaten my kids pleaseeee hold your pee until mommy can take u somewhere decent to pee. The only highlight for my kids in this zoo trip : they were able to feed giraffe at this zoo.

It would be hard to design environments which would stress or deprive animals more. This is a zoo from the early 1900s, where concrete is the preferred setting and animal have nothing to divert or stimulate them. It's just hideous. However, this seems not to be an issue, especially in countries like China, where animal welfare is not even considered. I'd recommend voting with your feet and staying away, but lack of patronage is unlikely to be a factor here. I expect that there will be thousands of visitors prepared to throw food at hapless animals for decades to come.

Firstly, the cost: we are an english-speaking family of 5 and travelled from Tianhe district via taxi for 12RMB one-way. The admission was 50RMB for an adult, and there is an odd height-based system (encountered also at the hotel where we stayed) where kids under 1.2m are free (5RMB for the 6yo who was between 1.1 and 1.2m). It is a very walkable zoo, sprawling really, but quite pleasant to stroll with wide, level pathways (there are occasionally narrow paths) by the lakes. As we had a baby we avoided the very loud auditorium with the ocean world shows, and were unable to visit the bird area as it had a great many stairs, but we managed to see the rest of what we wanted to see. The smell was overpowering in some cages - animals do smell, and I don't know what zoos typically do to care for animals but I don't know if these had not been bathed or their cages had not been cleaned. People used to zoos in western countries may find certain things confronting. They had many large cats in a small enclosure, with many opting to just lie there with their eyes closed though we saw one prowl unceasingly round and round the cage. On the other hand, small cages mean you're much, much closer to the animals so the kids get more out of it. We saw a couple of dogs chained to a bench - one was a samoyed which I thought at first was a stuffed animal - for the purpose of providing a good photographic opportunity. To be fair (and animal husbandry aside), the zoo makes a big effort to allow people to take nice photos, which I appreciated (though I couldn't bring myself to take a photo with the dogs). There are also many cute little areas within the zoo, and while it's a bit odd to be paying admission into yet another area (lucky we bought the tickets to go into all the areas - the basic admission is 20RMB for the curious) it's nice to break up the day. I was especially impressed with the thought behind the goldfish garden - lovely displays of fish with the fountain where kids can splash and catch their own fish, and other sand-art activities and games. The other area we visited had pony rides and some shows we didn't stay for. As for the animals, I have to give credit - they have made a great effort to track down many varieties of animal - I was very impressed by the kinds of different hornbill (for example) and macaws. In some zoos we've been to, there is one of each kind of species, but here they're just as likely to have examples of subspecies even. It's quite fascinating, and I'd never seen so many different birds. I also couldn't believe the turtle display, and really like the design of the glass enclosures for the reptiles and amphibians - very open and informative. We were very happy also to see - up close, and up to mischief! - 2 giant pandas. And I am fascinated by the delicate Chinese muntjac - I'd never heard of these before. The signage is in english and chinese which I also greatly appreciated. The girls were a bit disappointed to find the butterfly (and bat) exhibit was mostly informational though the butterfly-wing art was amazing. We went on the weekend and the crowds were manageable - no worse than at home really, and not as bad as I feared. There was even an amusement park area where the kids could hop in a dodgem car or spinning tea-cup (6RMB per ride) to let off some steam (and get off their feet)! As an adult I've visited zoos before but I managed to get a lot out of this one and enjoyed my day. The only (general) issue we encountered which I would flag for people who are not aware - hailing taxis. Do not be polite. If a taxi pulls over to disgorge passengers, get in yourself while the previous occupant is paying, or someone else will just sneak in and steal your taxi. Western politeness won't get you far here. Also, trying to hail a taxi around 3 or 4pm is really, really hard. Be aware of this, especially if travelling with children.

The closest metro station is Zoo from one side and a couple of stations from another side, entrance fee is 20 rmb for adults and 10 rmb for kids. Nice place, well maintained, cleaned, animals are pretty close to observe, during the week days not crowded. You can definitely spend there a couple of pleasant hours, not far from the downtown area.

This zoo is fantastic and you can get relatively close to the animals. The zoo is well designed and clean with a wide variety of animals you can not find in America. The monkeys here are super cute and a must see. The zoo also has both Giant and Red Pandas although the Giant Panda exhibit was closed when I went there.

The good thing about this zoo is that it's in the center of Guangzhou, just next to a metro station...easy to access. But because it's in the city center, the zoo is very small.
Been once and will not go back again, if I wanna spend a super good whole day at the zoo, I'd rather go to Chimelong zoo.
