A very beautiful temple. The interior decoration is striking in its beauty, you are guaranteed to get aesthetic pleasure.

Visit to the Guangzhou City God Temple was quite interesting. There were a lot of interesting things on display and the temple is quite large as well. The art work is well preserved and the temple looks quite grand. Do check it out.

This is next door to the Site of The Royal Garden of Nanyue Kingdom and so we had a quick stroll round here before visiting there. It was nice and not that different to any of the numerous other temples I’ve visited in China.

This amazing temple was in a state of disrepair but the government have painstakingly restored it to it's former glory. Foreigners such as us enter free of charge as the government are proud of their history and artifices and keen to show it to us. The main entry opens into a series or 'rooms' set around a central garden. Each of the rooms holds interesting displays of Chinese furniture and art work. The central garden area is calm and peaceful and abounds with the most magnificent bonsai plants. From here you can see the fabulous roof decorations. A taxi ride to get there is very cheap so make a point of going if you are close by.

Guangzhou City God Temple (aka, Temple of the Lord of the City Guangdong) was founded in 1370, under the reign of Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty. I believe it contains the relics of ChengHuang, a deity in Taoism, worshipped in ancient China. ChengHuang temples were built throughout China.
The temple continues to be a place of worship today, where people pray, burn incense, and leave gifts of food and money.
There are beautiful large painted mural scrolls on the two side walls. The paintings depict the gods in charge of 28 stars, 24 sectors, dragon kings of four oceans, king of the land, and the three stars of blessing, prosperity, and longevity. The painted scrolls were produced by two famous painters and 30 students over a period of six months.
Over the years the temple has been relocated, rebuilt, and renovated. The last renovation and reopening occurred in 2010.
A pamphlet at the temple indicates how to cup one hand in the other in front of your chest for prayer, how to kneel on the hassock (worship mat), how to bend at the waist, how to lie prostrate and kowtow, how to repeat certain actions two or three times, and more.
It was an honour to visit such a holy place of worship.

The establishment outside is already a social media photo worthy. There’s an activity at that time. We bought the coin bank and paste our wishes on the wall. We cannot write in Chinese characters nor can speak Chinese. But it was a wonderful experience.

Visited the temple as part of our Shanghai city tour. It was built in the 15th century during the Ming Dynasty. The temple was closed during the Cultural Revolution but reopened as a Taoist place of worship since 1951. It is dedicated to three city gods. Worshippers can buy “fake” money, incense or food to offer to the gods. The interior of the temple is beautiful. They pray for good fortune and peace. Take note of the murals on the walls as well as the statues enclosed in glass on your way out of the temple. There are smaller altars flanking the main one. At one time, the main hall of the temple was used as a jewelry store. On the entrance gates are pictures of the gods. It has become one of Shanghai’s top attraction.

Chenghuang (or Shing Wong in Cantonese) is the City God. He is a mid-level deity in the traditional Chinese pantheon - not really a specific god, but more a type of god.
This temple is a very nice one and one of the best in Guangzhou. Worth a visit - it is not busy and you can really explore uninhibited.
